The above video is: Donna the Buffalo’s Full Sunday Set at MagnoliaFest 2012- Thanks to Mark DaBabe for recording!

Donna the Buffalo’s feel-good, groove-oriented, danceable and often socially conscious music all began over twenty years ago with roots in old time fiddle music that evolved into a soulful electric Americana mix infused with elements of cajun/ zydeco, rock, folk, reggae, and country. Donna the Buffalo is known for touring the country remaining fiercely independent as one of the industry’s most diverse roots-music bands and has “earned a reputation as one of the most respected, eclectic and hardest-working acts today,” praises Encore.

Donna the Buffalo has been working on a 10th album with Jeb Puryear on guitar and vocals; Tara Nevins on fiddle, guitar, accordion, scrubboard and vocals; keyboardist Dave McCracken; bassist Kyle Spark; and drummer Mark Raudabaugh.

Dana and Susan Robinson are two guitar-playing, banjo-frailing, fiddle-sawing, and harmony-singing interpreters of the American experience. Their unique blend of contemporary songwriting and traditional Appalachian music bring to their performances a deep understanding of America’s musical heritage.

Celebrating the release of their new album, American Hornpipe, Dana and Susan Robinson will perform with world music trio Free Planet Radio (River Guerguerian, Eliot Wadopian, Chris Rosser) at select shows for their album release.  American Hornpipe is a melting pot of Appalachian, British, and African influences, full of earthy grooves, elegant melodies, stories of heroes, ne’er do-wells, and cautionary tales.

Catch them for one of their CD release shows in the Asheville area: 10/24 at Duckpond Pottery, 10/26 at White Horse Black Mountain, 10/27 at Madison County Arts Center

The title itself summons up the essence of this collection: “American Hornpipe”, a simple English dance tune, brought across the oceans like so many other articles of folklore, now fleshed out upon the rich tapestry of contemporary American culture.

The genius of a Dana and Susan Robinson performance lies in their ability to capture the imagination of their audience, evoking a transformative experience that touches on the deepest humanity. They can make the audience howl with laughter or hush with poignant reflection as they take them on a journey across America and convey the mystery and wonder of the places they visit.

From performing at Carnegie Hall to their music being featured in Ken Burn’s PBS documentaries Dana and Susan Robinson have been playing their trademark brand of “new-time, old-time music” for nearly twenty years.

What the Press is Saying About “American Hornpipe”

It’s grooves like these that instantly put a smile on my face!” – Martin Anderson WNCW Spindale, NC

American Hornpipe is awash in pleasures: Susan’s singing an unaccompanied ‘Fair & Tender Ladies,’ Dana’s New England-inflected fiddle and mandolin, Eliot Wadopian’s tone-perfect acoustic bass, River Guerguerian’s iron-clad grasp of how to use percussion to accentuate folk music. And the songs, not least of them Florida cowboy poet Hank Mattson’s (with Dana’s tune) ‘When This Old Hat Was New,’ not to mention the opener ‘Who Killed Cock Robin?’ with Susan’s hardboiled-detective vocal and the unsettling ghost-of-Fairport-Convention arrangement.” Rambles

The couple’s captivating version of the well-known ‘Who Killed Cock Robin’ sets the stage beautifully for the other songs to follow on the album. Among them is Dana’s original, ‘The Invitation,’ that invites listeners to ‘get unplugged and get recharged.’” The Laurel of Asheville

Rooted in time-honored old-time music, the Robinsons have branched out a bit, putting a slightly contemporary spin on many of the tunes on ‘American Hornpipe’. Some of the album is comprised of traditional old-time songs re-imagined into something fresh; music that is comfortable yet unexplored, like discovering a new trail in a forest you’ve traversed many times before. The original songs on the album feature a variety of songwriters, and throughout ‘American Hornpipe’, the world-music sounds of River Guerguerian’s Free Planet Radio join the Robinson’s string band sensibilities…This is a fun, heartfelt and unique piece of work.” — Brent Fleury, Bold Life

Love the rhythmic drive, and your fresh take on old chestnuts.” – Keith Weston WUNC Chapel Hill, NC

Acoustic Music Scene listed American Hornpipe in one of the top new albums of Sept 2012!

Great News!! Asheville musician Aaron Burdett won first place in the Carolina Songs Competition with Our State Magazine for his song “Going Home to Carolina”!

Our State writes:

From more than two hundred entries submitted in Our State magazine’s first-ever singer/songwriter competition, Aaron Burdett’s song “Going Home to Carolina”, has emerged as the winner. The competition called for original, North Carolina inspired songs that celebrate the place we call home. It was judged by a panel of local industry professionals.

“As judges, we had a great opportunity to hear some passionate songs about North Carolina,” said Rhiannon Giddens, lead singer of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, “Aaron did a wonderful job capturing the strong connection that I think all of us feel about the state.”

There is more information and a video of the song here: http://www.ourstate.com/songwriting/

“Aaron Burdett has become one of our favorite regional singer/songwriters these last few years.” —Martin Anderson, WNCW

Breathing Underwater, the new record by Aaron Burdett, is a well-crafted album of original songwriting. He reflects upon and questions life’s experiences in an honest tone, making you feel as if the songs are written on your behalf. A bit acoustic, a bit electric, and a bit early New Grass Revival, the music will get you moving to the beat in your most natural way. Take it on a road trip – I think you’ll enjoy the drive a bit more, and you may even find yourself singing along.” – Casey Driessen

“I’m exposed to all types of singers, songwriters, and frontmen, and rarely do I hear anyone that compares to Aaron Burdett.  His sense of melody and depth of lyrics is the perfect combination.  All he lacks is exposure to a national audience.  His trajectory will be comparable to Ray LaMontagne and Amos Lee when people start to take notice.  It will be exciting to watch.”  – Brian Swenk, Big Daddy Love

Storyteller and musician Aaron Burdett shares an appreciation for the simple pleasures of life through his music. Burdett released his 4th album, Breathing Underwater September 11th, 2012. Building on the traditions of the finest performing songwriters such as John Hiatt, James Taylor, Cat Stevens, and John Prine, Aaron’s music blends folk-rock, bluegrass, and blues with pop sensibilities. His honest songwriting pours in between hammer-on chord changes and rolling crosspicking rhythms, all the while keeping at the forefront his own unique sound and authentic voice.

You can find out more about him and the new album at http://www.AaronBurdett.com.

Barbie Dockstader Angell’s Upcoming Children’s Book Roasting Questions

Poems & Illustrations

Available Now on Pre-Sale

Preview the book at www.RoastingQuestions.com

A delightful book of children’s poems & illustrations Roasting Questions by Barbie Dockstader Angell is available now for pre-sale with the goal of publishing before the holiday season. Roasting Questions is highly recommended for kids, you, your friends and for anyone with an imagination! The Book is available to preview at RoastingQuestions.com. Please check it out & consider buying–& sponsoring (which will get you some great goodies!)

Angell’s goal is to raise $5000 total to ensure the book will be published in time for the holidays. On Monday, October 15th, Roasting Questions received a $500 donation with two stipulations. One, that the donor remain anonymous, and two, that the book receive another $500 in pre-sales and sponsorships by Monday, October 22nd.

Angell, an Asheville favorite, was named in the top three for 2011 and 2012’s Mountain Xpress “Best of WNC poets.” This is her first book.

Barbie Angell is not just a prominent poet, but also a gifted illustrator. Roasting Questions, her first book, features original illustrations as well as child-friendly poems for all ages.

“My goal has always been to reach people who don’t know they like poetry, and convince them that they do,” Angell says.

A self-described “writer who rhymes,” Angell’s affinity for rhyme grew naturally from a youth spent devouring the works of Shel Silverstein and Lewis Carroll. In fact, Roasting Questions features several nods to the Where The Sidewalk Ends author. Rosanne Cash, who knew Silverstein, says, “Barbie’s poems are reminiscent of Shel Silverstein, but totally unique to her sensibility. They are infused with a bright spirit, a heart that seeks and explores, and a gentle insight.”

Angell brings her witty humor to ice-cream shops, schools, libraries, parties, and also performs her unique “bar poetry” in more adult settings. Asheville’s Mountain Xpress writes, “Local poet Barbie Angell is known for her mischievous sense of humor (in case you missed it a year-and-a-half ago, go here for Angell’s Rapture Survival tips), her fanciful, elfin-inspired fashion, and (most importantly) her poetry.”

Roasting Questions is published through Grateful Steps Publishing, a nonprofit publishing house based in Asheville, NC. The book can be previewed and pre-ordered at www.RoastingQuestions.com, and will be released officially around Thanksgiving 2012. A portion of the proceeds from the book will be donated to Mooseheart Child City, where Angell lived for four years.

Here’s what folks are saying about Roasting Questions:

“Her ‘anthropomorphizing’ of feelings (‘irony tastes like fudge’) is quirky and engaging. I imagine children and adults both will revel in her work– both her poetry and her wonderful drawings.”  —Rosanne Cash

“Art is about oblique angles — seeing things in ways we’ve never seen them before. Barbie has a gift for that, and this book is a generous invitation to the rest of us to climb inside her quirky head for a delightful ride.”  —David LaMotte

“In her poetry Angell opens up her soul for all to see. She discusses her shortcomings, her views on life, lessons learned and a host of other topics. You can definitely read strength in what she is saying and like all good writers she speaks not only for herself but of life in general and of the status quo.”  —Rapid River Magazine

Donna the Buffalo kicks off for their Fall tour this weekend starting with the last festival of the season at Magnolia Fest in Live Oak, Florida! Then the band makes their way to the west coast for the first time in a few years with stops in Mobile, New Orleans, Austin, Albuquerque and Flagstaff before few shows in southern California. Then they head north and link up with David Gans for four shows in the Bay Area after which they make their way to Eugene and Portland and finish up the tour in Seattle before heading back east.

7 Day South Florida New Year’s Eve Run

Donna the Buffalo is answering The Herd’s call to come south with a seven-day New Years Eve run in South Florida which includes a night at Revolution in Ft Lauderdale, three nights at Skippers in Tampa and three nights at the Green Parrot in Key West.

Finally There is a Buffalo Named Donna!
SAVE THE BUFFALO ~ ADOPT A BUFFALO!

DtB has launched a campaign to help relocate over 140 wild bison from a private ranch in Montana to their native lands on the Wyoming Wind River Reservation. What DtB proposed is a “SAVE THE BUFFALO” campaign where if you donate $50.00 you will essentially “ADOPT A BUFFALO” and the bison will be NAMED AFTER YOU! (Or your child, or loved one, anyone you want actually). Donna The Buffalo started the campaign and have now saved and adopted a buffalo… and named it Donna. They are calling on The Herd for support as well. More information here: http://wp.me/pxjHY-1LY

Calling all Herd!  There is a situation calling for help and we are perfect for the job!

Yellowstone bison return to Fort Peck Reservation in Montana – Photo by Ted Wood

Finally There is a Buffalo Named Donna!

SAVE THE BUFFALO ~ ADOPT A BUFFALO!

National Wildlife Federation has an amazing opportunity to help relocate over 140 wild bison from a private ranch in Montana, to their native lands on the Wyoming Wind River Reservation. The Shoshone and Arapaho Tribes of the Wind River Reservation have already expressed their desire to accept these magnificent creatures. This could provide the bison with hundreds of thousands of acres of habitat to thrive on as a wide-ranging herd. You can read more about it here: http://blog.nwf.org/2012/09/wind-river-tribes-unite-to-return-yellowstone-bison-to-their-native-homeland/

We, in Donna the Buffalo, along with you The Herd can help make this happen! How perfect Donna the Buffalo and The Herd helping make possible this restoration of 140 Bison to their native land!

Yellowstone Bison in the quarantine pasture in Gardiner, Montana – Photo by Ted Wood

We presented the following idea to the National Wildlife Federation and they loved it! It costs just $50.00 to move one of these Bison back to its native land. What we proposed is a “SAVE THE BUFFALO” campaign where if you donate $50.00 you will essentially “ADOPT A BUFFALO” and the Bison will be NAMED AFTER YOU! (Or your child, or loved one, anyone you want actually). You will receive a certificate from the National Wildlife Federation saying so!

We’ve started the campaign and have now saved and adopted a buffalo! What fun there’s finally a buffalo named Donna!!

We hope you join us in this endeavor. Our goal is to accomplish this by election day on Tuesday, November 6th! Montana will be electing a new Governor who may or may not be partial to the welfare of these bison!
