Levi Lowrey Releases Self-Titled Album Today

.
Levi Lowrey is thrilled to release his self-titled album today, February 25, 2014, through Southern Ground Artists. The album is available exclusively for download on iTunes and physical copies can be purchased at Levi’s online store and live shows.
.
Noisetrade is offering an exclusive behind the scenes look at the making of the album. To watch the video, and pick up free downloads of three tracks off the album (“Picket Fences”, “December Thirty-One”, and “Urge For Leaving”); please visit here.
.
Showcasing all original material, with the exception of one cover, the album features Lowrey collaborating with an impressive list of guest musicians that includes Clay Cook (Zac Brown Band), fiddler Ross Holmes (Mumford & Sons/Cadillac Sky), Oliver Wood (The Wood Brothers) and acclaimed performer, producer and Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee Mac McAnally. This new project was executive produced by Zac Brown along with co-producers Matt Mangano and Clay Cook. It was recorded from start to finish in just two weeks at Southern Ground Studios in Nashville, TN.
.
True to his reputation as a talented writer, Lowrey penned four of the fifteen songs by himself on the self-titled album and co-wrote the other ten original tracks. Each new story song offers brutally honest insights about life culled from his adventures in the real world. Lowrey is a happily married man who home schools his two children with his wife while working as a successful musician. On the other hand, he is a constant observer of the rough sides of life and he is not afraid to branch out and explore subjects that others might find too uncomfortable for casual conversation.
.
“You know, I haven’t written about my wife’s health struggles with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma yet, but there are elements of it that kind of snuck their way into the songs anyway, especially on ‘December Thirty-One,’” Lowrey says. “There’s the realization that a change for the better can happen at any second or any minute. There is a hopeful sort of desperation the whole record displays.”
.
As evidence of this optimism, Lowrey isn’t one to complain or even ponder why he might be experiencing hardships that others don’t have to endure. Instead, he channels his energies, his frustrations and his talent into his craft.
.
“I think that this earth and its struggles are to build character; we have to be thankful for that,” Lowrey states. “The song ‘Long Way Home’ says right up front, ‘I’ve wasted hours praying for rain, and I cursed the clouds when they finally came.’ We pray for blessings in our lives, but we’re unwilling to go through the storms before we get there.”
.
Kind Words about Levi Lowrey:
p1456524380-2
“Each consecutive album by a great artist further defines their sound and identity.  Levi’s new self titled record is no exception. I’ve really enjoyed watching Levi reach his vast potential as a songwriter and artist.” —Zac Brown
.
“December Thirty One” is “an evocative ode to romantic optimism sung in an engaging folkie tenor…there’s real promise here.” —Music Row, Robert K. Oermann
.
“An enlightened storyteller with a novel musical approach, he displays an astonishing diversity of songcraft and a consistent level of inspiration.“ —Alan Cackett
.
“Southern gritty folk troubador” —Country Fried Rock
.
“Levi Lowrey looks back to his younger years not as a memory but looking for the crossroads between living with no responsibilities and a life where you have yourself and a few more souls on your watch. For Levi, the telling moment is when you can answer the question, ‘are you living or just trying your best not to die’.” —The Alternate Root
.
“His new album is bursting with a wide variety of sounds, from moving ballad ‘Before the Hymnal Died’ to a greasy, Southern rock cover of Black Sabbath’s ‘War Pigs.’”–Engine 145, Juli Thanki
.
“Tracks like ‘Picket Fences’, ‘December Thirty-One,’ and ‘Before The Hymnal Died’ confirm to me that Levi Lowrey stands shoulder to shoulder with Jason Isbell, Chris Stapleton, and Will Hoge as the best in what Southern songwriting has to offer.” —Blue Ridge Outdoors, Dave Stallard
.

“Solid, velvet vocals, and down-to-earth songwriting” —Exclaim.CA

.

“Levi Lowrey is a well traveled, well versed songwriter who carries the country boy image as well as he carries a tune on his self-titled release.” —Boone Mountain Time

Town Mountain on Tour Spring and Summer 2014
Hard Drivin’ Bluegrass
.
After five days on the Caribbean for the Mountain Song at Sea, Town Mountain has their land legs back. They arrived back to Asheville just in time for the biggest snowstorm of the year.. quite the drastic change from the bluegrass cruise. Now we’re on the heels of spring, and man doesn’t it feel good.
.
Town Mountain will play couple of shows this winter in Virginia before heading over to Bellingham, WA to kick off festival season early at Wintergrass, an incredible festival where the people are sick-and-tired of the cold so they pretend it’s summertime and hold up in a hotel for a long weekend and pick, watch bands and celebrate the fact that spring is oh-so-near.
.
2014 is going to be Town Mountain’s busiest and best year yet; their schedule is bursting with music festivals and club shows throughout the country throughout the year. They celebrate spring’s arrival at Suwannee Springfest in Live Oak, FL. As the season progresses other festivals they will perform at include Durango Bluegrass MeltDown (CO), MerleFest (NC), Aiken Bluegrass Festival (SC), Lake Eden Arts Festival, Graves Mountain Festival (VA), Appalachian Uprising (OH), California Bluegrass Association Father’s Day Festival, and Bean Blossom (IN) before landing in Alaska for the Nome Midnight Sun Folk Fest to close out the season. They will pick back up in early July for summer shows including performances at RockyGrass (CO), Targhee Bluegrass Festival (WY) and more still yet to be announced.
.
The sound of the award-winning group Town Mountain can best be described as traditional bluegrass, albeit with a rough-hewn side to it that is not too slick or glossy. They are a band of the here-and-now, yet they have a groove that is based on the bluesy and swinging sounds explored by the first generation of bluegrass pioneers of the last century. Town Mountain is Robert Greer on vocals and guitar, Jesse Langlais on banjo and vocals, Bobby Britt on fiddle, Phil Barker on mandolin and vocals, and new addition to the band, Rob Parks on bass. The band plans on recording a new album in late 2014.
.
They’ve got lots of great new original material that they’re eager to play, and of course playing all the hits too. Keep your eyes on townmountain.net, facebook.com/TownMountain and twitter.com/TownMountain for full tour details and other fun news from the road.

Late in the evening of August 30th, 2013… or, was it early in the morning of August 31st? Danny Barnes, Larry Keel, Jenny Keel and myself were led into the Elk’s Lodge of Troy, Ohio to play a late night show for a packed room of folks who had spent their day in the blazing late summer sun…enjoying themselves to the fullest. We wondered if they had anything left in the tank… By God, did they ever. Through the sweat, the endless toasts, the folks who faded in the heat of the crowded room… I hope you enjoy a few hours of bluegrass fun between me and some of my dearest friends. Late night from Troy…no holding back now, folks.

Leftover Salmon To Digitally Release 2004 Self-Titled Album on Feb 11th
Bill Payne of Little Feat to Join Leftover Salmon for Several Shows

LS-Thanksgiving'13_DLlogo-12

Leftover Salmon is thrilled to announce that on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 their 2004  album, Leftover Salmon, will be available digitally for the first time on all major digital outlets.

“The self-titled work was a collaboration with producer-friend Bill Payne of Little Feat. Mature yet playful, graceful yet dirty, it became apparent that Leftover Salmon was poised for out-and-out domination” writes Scott Caffrey (2005).

When asked how they came to choose Little Feat member Bill Payne as Leftover Salmon’s producer by Mike Greenhaus (2004), Drew Emmit summed up up the beginning of what was to become a long-term friendship and collaboration:

When we had our benefit concerts for Mark Vann when he was ill, [Little Feat’s] Paul Barrere and Bill Payne came out for those shows and played all five nights. We really formed a connection with them then and they were very supportive. Their presence was amazing and playing music with them was amazing after being such big Little Feat fans. So when we were trying to figure out producers for this record we were just trying to think of who would be really good organizationally—who would really bring all of this together. When Vince and I had gone out to the 25th Anniversary of Little Feat concert with Sam Bush, Bela Fleck, Jackson Browne, and Billy Bob Thornton, Bill Payne was the driving force in keeping it all together. So we had this vision of him: not only do we love his music, but he is really great at bringing different sounds together. He plays a particularly beautiful solo on “Whispering Waters”—-it makes me feel like I am at the ocean.

To celebrate the digital release of the album, Leftover Salmon is offering a free stream and download of the track “Whispering Waters” featuring Bill Payne: http://bit.ly/LOSWhisperingWaters.

In true Salmon form, they’ll be performing songs from the album at shows mixed in with other old Leftover favorites, songs from their 2012 release Aquatic Hitchhiker, as well as new tunes release last year through Breckenridge Brewery. Bill Payne meets up with LoS halfway through their Powder Daze Winter Tour at the WinterWonderGrass Festival in Avon, CO this February and then travels on with LoS for shows in Jackson, WY and Victor, ID, then two nights in Big Sky, MT with the tour ending in Missoula. Leftover Salmon will pick back up for their early spring tour starting in late March.

Looking back over the past 25 years of rootsy, string-based music, the impact of Leftover Salmon is impossible to deny. Today, Leftover Salmon is: Vince Herman (vocals, acoustic and electric guitar, mandolin); Drew Emmitt (vocals, mandolin, acoustic and electric guitar, mandola, fiddle); Andy Thorn (vocals, acoustic and electric banjo, National guitar); Greg Garrison (vocals, acoustic and electric bass, acoustic guitar); Alwyn Robinson (drums, percussion).

Jonathan Scales Fourchestra is heading into the studio in the middle-of-nowhere Virginia at Summit Sound to record the bands first TRIO record, no guests, not extra orchestration, just raw Jonathan Scales Fourchestra. This will be their most ambitious record for the band, inspired by Roy “Futureman” Wooten, the album will be their first real attempt to put together an “epic, long-form masterpiece.” The new release, Mixtape Symphony, is expected to drop in late spring through Ropeadope Records.

Jonathan Scales Fourchestra is an example of musical sincerity. Weaving together collective and individual influences without compromise, they are as much themselves as they are a unit—a crucial trait of landmark instrumental ensembles. Equally captivating is steel pannist and founder Jonathan Scales’ compositional skill as is his tasteful, avant-garde improvisational approach.

“Scales is to steel pans ….what Béla Fleck is to the banjo—an über innovator,” says Driftwood Magazine. Drummer and percussionist Phill Bronson drives the Fourchestra’s time-shifting, modern grooves with graceful polyrhythmic chops and the listening ability of a true master. (His talent has been praised by Victor Wooten, Oteil Burbridge, Ellie Mannette, and others.) Bassist Cody Wright rounds out the ensemble with a groundbreaking hybrid picking style stemming from his background as a highly practiced fusion guitarist. With gut-wrenching grooves and blistering, soulful melodic lines, Wright’s mix of flash and feel adds a unique depth to the Fourchestra.

Together, the group explodes onto stages with an indescribable sound that is as much felt as it is heard, and is said to have “a Thelonious Monk-like attitude with a Mozart creativity that works.” (Pan on the Net) The group’s self-titled debut collaborative album features unparalleled sonic density and envelope-pushing compositions. Guest collaborators include Grammy winning masters Victor Wooten and Howard Levy (Béla Fleck and the Flecktones) and is fully orchestrated with horns and strings.

Galen Kipar Project has been on the rise since 2006, and are currently recording their fifth album at Echo Mountain Studio in Asheville, NC and at the Jefferson Center with Summit Sound’s engineer in Roanoke, VA. They will be launching a kickstarter campaign soon to help fund getting the new music out to the world and expect to release the album by the end of the year.

Crafting a fusion of folk, classical, jazz, and blues, Galen Kipar Project has been hailed as “complex yet accessible” and “cohesive and poignant” with “experimental folk masterpieces.” Based in Asheville, GKP is Lyndsay Pruett (violin/ vocals), Jeremy Young (Drums), Ben Portwood (upright bass/ vocals), Galen Kipar (guitar/ harmonicas and vocals), Aaron Ballance (lap steel guitar/ dobro) and Jon Morrow (8 string Novak guitar/bass).

Galen Kipar Project has released four albums, the most recent being The Scenic Route in 2010. “The aptly titled effort is loaded with images of mountains, rivers, forests and streams, and backed by lush arrangements, fluid vocals and Appalachian instrumentation that bring to life what is essentially a musical portrait of Western North Carolina,” says the Mountain Xpress.

Songwriter and host of the Grateful Dead Hour, David Gans states about the album, “It’s like a collection of short stories, brilliantly constructed and with a unique and compelling literary voice. I keep coming back to each song, listening more deeply and being drawn more deeply in.” Gans says about Galen’s music, ” I was hooked right away… Strange, slightly other-worldly acoustic music sung in a sweet, slightly distracted voice. I think of it as a sort of American Primitive, with hits of Sandy Bull in the guitars, Brett Dennen in the voice, Donna the Buffalo in the rustic simplicity, and something altogether new in the wonderful orchestrations… In the words of Tina Fey, “When I hear the sounds of this nearby world, I want to go to there.'”
