Acoustic Syndicate Performs in the Southeast This Fall, Announces Thanksgiving Show

Celebrating the Anniversaries of WNCW & Isothermal Community College in Sept
Shows in Georgia and Florida in Early November
Annual Thanksgiving Homecoming Show Set for Nov 29th at The Grey Eagle in Asheville

With a touring and recording history of more than 20 years, a strong following regionally and beyond, and a history of playing festivals like Bonnaroo and Farm Aid, North Carolina favorites Acoustic Syndicate returned in 2013 with their first record since 2004, Rooftop Garden.

The band is set to perform a select number of shows in the southeast this Fall including two shows on September 27th; a daytime performance at the Isothermal Community College (the home of WNCW radio) in Spindale, NC for the college’s 50 Year Anniversary, and another set later that evening at Pisgah Brewing Company’s outdoor stage in Black Mountain, NC to celebrate WNCW’s 25 Year Anniversary on the airwaves. In early November they return to Smith’s Olde Bar in Atlanta before heading on to Lucky’s in Valdosta, GA and the Riverhawk Music Festival in Brooksville, FL. Acoustic Syndicate is also happy to announce their annual Asheville Thanksgiving show at the Grey Eagle in Asheville on November 29th.

Having claimed the #6 spot in WNCW’s 2013 year-end Top-100 listener poll with Rooftop Garden, the band is as beloved to the Western North Carolina audience as they’ve ever been. “Acoustic Syndicate has remained one of WNCW listeners’ favorite regional and overall acts ever since they began in the ‘90’s,” says WNCW’s Martin Anderson. “In fact they were one of the Top 10 favorite WNCW artists during our big 20th Anniversary vote in 2009, ranking alongside such A-list acts as the Avett Brothers, the Allman Brothers, and Alison Krauss. When I think of bands that best represent the overall sound of what we do at WNCW – roots music, rock, jamming, harmonizing, songs that tell a good story – it’s hard to think of a better one than Acoustic Syndicate.”

Produced by Grammy Award winner Stewart Lerman (Boardwalk Empire, Patti Smith, The Roches, Antony and the Johnsons, Crash Test Dummies), Rooftop Garden features the band’s distinctive blend of rock and acoustic music, all influenced by the players’ love of a wide range of music, from reggae to American roots. “Their modern take on traditional bluegrass and rock values culminates in a glimmering, driving sound rich with acoustic textures and glowing vocals,” writes Paul Kerr on JamBase.

They have also branched out into new territory with the album as Glide’s Bryan Rodgers notes, “… in 2010, new songs began creeping into set-lists and the band began a new era. The culmination is Rooftop Garden…The passage of time, dedication to other interests (family, farming, and software engineering for instance) and newfound musical freedom helped the band create their most personal album yet, which is remarkable. All of the music… has a distinctly human touch, with topics like sustainability, the frailty of existence, love, and community. Rooftop Garden is somehow more immediate because of where the band now finds themselves musically: with no one to please but themselves and an even broader range of life experiences from which to cull material.”

“The tunes on this album were written with an essentially positive message, one about humanity, earth, responsibility and peace,” said singer/guitarist Steve McMurry. He and his cousin Bryon McMurry (banjo, electric guitar) split the songwriting and lead vocal duties 50/50 on this new album, and are joined by Bryon’s brother Fitz McMurry (drums) for the kind of three part harmony that only close relatives who grew up singing together can conjure up. The band is rounded out by always in-demand bassist Jay Sanders and dobro wizard Billy Cardine; both of whom make use of Moog synthesizers and pedals to craft a unique ensemble sound.

The McMurry family has been in family farming in the same region of Cleveland County, NC since the 1700s. Their love of the land and their serious approach to its stewardship is echoed by the love of the music they make and the care with which they make it. Rooftop Garden conveys important things about the environment we all share, grounded in the life experiences of people who truly love what they do. “Through our music, we have tried to maintain a consistent message, a reminder,” says Steve McMurry, “that this Earth is the only one we will ever have. And though we speak of some lofty ideals in our music, my most fervent hope is that when people listen to us or come to our show, they leave with a laugh and a smile and the satisfaction of having been a part of something positive.”

JAB announces November Shows with The Travelin’ McCourys as Part of The Bluegrass Ball

Jeff Austin is on tour with Danny Barnes (banjo and vocals), Eric Thorin (bass and vocals), and Ross Martin (guitar and vocals) as the newly formed Jeff Austin Band.

They have added additional tour dates for this Fall including appearances in New Jersey, Virginia and West Virginia in October. New for this November, Jeff Austin Band is linking up with The Travelin’ McCourys  as part of The Bluegrass Ball, the widely successful collaborative festival on wheels the McCourys started, for a week with shows in Dallas, St Louis, Bloomington, Madison and Minneapolis.

These dates are in addition to their previously announced dates out west for shows this October in Flagstaff, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Arcata, Eugene, Portland, Seattle and Bellingham. JAB will also be performing two nights at Railroad Earth’s Hangtown Halloween Ball in Placerville, CA where Leftover Salmon and moe. amongst others. Jeff will also be featured as an “Artist-at-Large” at the Ball.

Austin is set to make several festival appearances over the next month, including Grateful Grass sets at Utopia Festival and Lockn’ with Keller Williams, and two sets with JAB at the Phases of the Moon Festival.

Corey Harris and the Rasta Blues Experience are traveling for some select shows including a couple of shows in Virginia in late August, The Asheville Music Hall on September 6th, and at the Garfield Center for the Arts in Chestertown Maryland on October 10th.

Corey Harris and Rasta Blues Experience have been been traveling with their recent album, Fulton Blues [2013 Stable Roots Productions]. Fulton Blues is rooted in the blues tradition with true story-telling and soulful musicianship. It marked the next step in the nearly twenty-year career of today’s most daring and innovative acoustic blues player. Corey Harris and the Rasta Blue Experience is Corey Harris on Acoustic/Electric Guitar, Banjo, Lead & Background Vocals; Hook Herrera on Harmonica; Chris “Thelonious Nut” Whitley on Piano & Organ; Kenneth “Trini Joe” Joseph on Drums; Gordon “Saxman” Jones on Tenor/Alto/Baritone Sax; and Jayson “Brother J” Morgan on Bass.

Fulton is a community in Richmond, VA that is older than the city itself. From its docks on the James river, the first African captives were marched to the city’s slave market to be sold into bondage. This Black town on the east end of the city endured for more than 300 years until its land was seized and the families living there were forcibly evicted in the name of greed masquerading as progress. Fulton Blues is a collection of both original and classic material, that celebrates the timeless sound of traditional blues with fresh, insightful lyrics that paint an unflinching picture of life in the American South, both then and now. The stories in the fourteen songs on the album range from love, loss and longing to celebration, tragedy and triumph.

This November, Harris pays a number of shows with Taj Mahal, Shemekia Copeland, Guy Davis, Alvin Youngblood Hart, and Phil Wiggins as part of True Blues, a multi-media a celebration of the contemporary African-American performers of traditional acoustic blues. The project includes an album in 2013 , a variety of concert performances, and a DVD that will be released in the winter of 2014 through Telarc Records. Watch the DVD Trailer here: 

In the spring of 2014, PBS released a Corey Harris special DVD, Journeys, that aired on public television by the The American Music Research Foundation (AMRF), producers of the award winning Motor City Blues and Boogie Woogie Series of Public TV Programs. Journeys presents the Harris performing solo as well as duets with harmonica maestro Phil Wiggins, harmonies with special guest Thornetta Davis, and with the Rasta Blues Experience connecting musical dots from Africa to the Americas. “If you don’t have any idea where your traditions, where your culture, where your popular culture comes from, that’s a problem,” says Harris, who is dedicated to keeping the Blues alive.”That’s what makes people unique, is that knowledge about where they’re coming from.”

Corey Harris knows where his traditions and culture and music come from, which is why Martin Scorsese chose him as a featured artist and narrator to take viewers on a musical journey from Mississippi to West Africa in “Feel Like Going Home,” the first episode of his celebrated PBS series “The Blues” in 2003.

Corey can surely play the Blues too, and there is nothing ossified about his performances. He also plays African music, reggae, soul and jazz, and uses his mastery of the instruments, the complex cadences and rhythms, and the feelings of the music that evolved in the New World via the African diaspora to create something entirely new. Some call it “Progressive Blues.”

In 2007, he was awarded a $500,000 MacArthur Fellowship – commonly referred to as a “genius award.” “Corey Harris forges an adventurous path marked by deliberate eclecticism. With one foot in tradition and the other in contemporary experimentation, he blends musical styles often considered separate and distinct to create something entirely new, says the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. That same year, he was also awarded an honorary Doctor of Music degree from Bates College, in Lewiston, Maine.

Corey has performed, recorded, and toured with many of the top names in music such as BB King, Taj Mahal, Buddy Guy, Henry Butler, R.L.Burnside, John Jackson, Ali Farka Toure, Dave Matthews Band, Tracy Chapman, Olu Dara, Wilco, Natalie Merchant, and others. His additional recordings include Fish Ain’t Bitin’ (1996), Vu-Du Menz (with Henry Butler, 2000), Downhome Sophisticate (2002), Zion Crossroads (2007), blu black (2009 ), DC Blues (2010), Father Sun-Mother Earth (2011), Fulton Blues (2013), True Blues (with Taj Mahal, Shemeka Copeland, Guy Davis, Alvin Hart and Phil Wiggins (2013).

Town Mountain Nominated for IBMA’s Emerging Artist of the Year; New Live Album Out 8/19

“Emerging Artist of the Year”
In This Fall’s International Bluegrass Music Association’s Awards

We are thrilled to announce that Town Mountain has been nominated for the International Bluegrass Music Association’s 2014 Award for “Emerging Artist of The Year.” This nomination follows last years honor of receiving IBMA Momentum Awards for “Band of the Year” and lead singer Robert Greer for “Vocalist of the Year.” The members of Town Mountain have thought long and hard about their cultivated roots music groove with strong focus on crafting original material. “Without doubt, this band has fine writing chops,” writes Donald Teplyske in the Lonesome Road Review.

The past two years have pushed Town Mountain into the upper tier of acoustic bands and they have found themselves along the side of some of the best artists today at some of the most prestigious festivals in the country such as MerleFest, Grey Fox, Rockygrass, Suwannee Springfest and the Targhee Bluegrass Festival just to mention a few.  

Town Mountain’s hard drivin’ bluegrass sound, tight harmonies, and stellar in-house songwriting have become the band’s trademark. They light up the stage with their honky tonk edge and barroom swagger, featuring a Jimmy Martin-style bounce and confidence that is countered at times by a laid-back John Hartford-esque groove. Town Mountain includes Robert Greer on vocals and guitar, Jesse Langlais on banjo and vocals, Bobby Britt on fiddle, Phil Barker on mandolin and vocals, and Nick DiSebastian on bass.

“It’s a proud moment in Town Mountain’s history, for sure,” said banjoist Jesse Langlais to acclaimed journalist Derek Halsey after last year’s awards show. “We’re out there doing what we do because we love to play the music… it is really nice to be recognized by the IBMA and we have experienced some good things to come from it already. When you look at it as this big wheel that is spinning, the music industry wheel, it’s great and hopefully we can live up to those momentous expectations and I think we will. We will do what we can to help to carry the legacy of the music on and make the IBMA and all who believe in Town Mountain proud of what we do.”

They are set to release their first official live album, Town Mountain: Live At The Isis, on August 19th, 2014. The concert was recorded in their hometown of Asheville, NC at Isis Music Hall. The album features live versions of previously released studio material including crowd favorites “Lawdog,” “Tarheel Boys” and the fiddle tune “Four Miles.” Amidst the original songs are a couple of lively Town Mountain-tweaked covers such as “The Race Is On” and “Orange Blossom Special.” The audio was mixed by Scott Vestal, acclaimed banjoist with the Sam Bush Band, who also mixed their fourth studio album Leave The Bottle [Pinecastle Records 2012].

Leave the Bottle, which was produced by Mike Bub, garnered the band much positive praise. Bluegrass Today’s David Morris says, “I’m not sure what the definition of bluegrass would be in words alone, but if that definition was set to music, it would probably sound something like Town Mountain’s Leave the Bottle… I could go on… There are no duds, and no filler songs on this project. But you get the point. This, my friends, is how bluegrass is supposed to sound.” The Bluegrass Situation’s Devon Leger repeats this reflection saying, “They play bluegrass. Period. They play it hard, they play it fast, and they play it like their fingers are bleeding and their picks are breaking.”

The group has focused on the goal of creating a unique sound and brand while still giving a nod and a wink to the traditional side of the bluegrass genre. Juli Thanki of Engine 145 says, “Phil Barker’s ‘Lawdog’ sounds like an unearthed classic, and the group’s tight harmonies alone make this record [Leave the Bottle] a treat for any bluegrass fan.”

Town Mountain has been busy writing new songs for their next studio effort which will be out in early 2015. They are currently touring the Northwest before a plethora of dates in northeast, the southern appalachian region, and the midwest. In the fall the band will be appearing at the Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion, Watermelon Park Festival, IBMA’s World of Bluegrass Festival, 34th Annual Georgia MarbleFest and a host of other shows.

The band has been having an exciting year so far and have traveled far and wide including some notable appearances in 2014 at Wintergrass, Suwannee Springfest, Durango Bluegrass MeltDown, Music City Roots, MerleFest, Lake Eden Arts Festival, Graves Mountain Festival, Best of Bluegrass, California Bluegrass Association Father’s Day Festival, Bean Blossom Bluegrass Festival, The Grey Fox Music Festival, Rockygrass and Targhee Bluegrass Festival, as well as a recent show at City Winery in Chicago supporting Ralph Stanley and his Clinch Mountain Boys.

Aloha! That’s right, Leftover Salmon is excited to announce they are headed back to Hawaii for what “Ho’olaule’a 2”! Ho’olaule’a is the Hawaiian word for Festivaaalll!! The festivities will be centralized around the hippy town of Paia on the north shore of Maui. Leftover Salmon featuring Bill Payne of Little Feat will be taking over Paia town from January 6th – 12th and performing shows on January 8th -11th, 2015. Two show will take place at the legendary Charley’s Saloon, right in Paia town and two show at the Mill House on the beautiful Maui Tropical Plantation in nearby Wailuku.

The band had such a blast spending a week based in Paia town this past year, that they wanted to encourage fans traveling to Maui for Ho’olaule’a 2 to do the same this coming January. There is lodging and other information below. We hope to see you in Maui for Ho’olaule’a 2. Mahalo!

The festival takes place at the magnificent Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park, located just north of Live Oak, FL, which is a one-of-a-kind music park and premier 500+ acre campground nestled on the shady banks of the historic, tea-colored Suwannee River in North Florida. SOSMP hosts a variety of events throughout the year including Wannee, Suwannee Springfest, Bear Creek Music and Arts Festival, Hulaween, Aura Music Festival and other special events.
