DENVER, CO — This March 19-22 Leftover Salmon’s Boogie At The Broadmoor returns for its second year to the Broadmoor Resort in Colorado Springs. This year a charity portion has been added to the event called Let’s Boogie To Benefit Mental Health. In 2020, the focus is on mental health, an important health concern that everyone and anyone can relate to, but a topic not openly talked about enough.

Let’s Boogie To Benefit Mental Health will consist of events addressing and bringing awareness to this important topic. Three events have been added —Bowling with the Band featuring Leftover Salmon and Circles Around The Sun on Thursday evening and We Bee Spelling featuring Andy Frasco and a an all-star jam on Sunday evening with members of Yonder Mountain String Band and more — bookending Leftover Salmon’s Boogie At The Broadmoor. An additional free concert and Charity Raffle featuring Woodshed Red was added on Friday evening.

Leftover Salmon will be working closely with Backline, a recently formed organization that supports music industry professionals and their families; along with support on the national, state, and local level from the mental wellness organizations: National Alliance on Mental Illness, Mental Health Colorado, and Pikes Peak Suicide Prevention. These organizations will be on site throughout the weekend spreading awareness about this critically important topic.

Together we hope to raise funds and awareness throughout the Boogie At The Broadmoor weekend. All are welcome to attend the Let’s Boogie To Benefit events on a donation basis, even if you are not attending the festival that weekend. There is limited capacity to these events, so please get involved while space is still available.

Bowling with the Band – Thursday, March 19th 7-11pm
Roll into Boogie at the Broadmoor on Thursday with a very special bowling tournament) and fundraising event to start the weekend at Play, the Broadmoor’s bowling alley. Bowling with the Band gives fans a rare chance to bowl with members of Leftover Salmon and Circles Around the Sun before the weekend’s festivities kick off on Friday. Teams of up to five (5) bowlers can sign up online to participate for $500/team ($100/bowler) and each team will be paired with a member of Leftover Salmon or Circles Around the Sun for the evening’s event. We Bee Spelling – Sunday, March 22nd 5-10:30pm
On Sunday March 22nd, Boogie at the Broadmoor will host a finale benefit event: We Bee Spelling, a comedy game show hosted by Alex Greer, Kyle Ayers (Conan) with house bandleader Andy Frasco with Leftover Salmon. We Bee Spelling is a one-of-a-kind experience — part late night variety show, part spelling bee, and all for charity — supporting mental health through Backline and Colorado mental wellness programs. Contestants participate in this interactive, live improv show on behalf of Backline and do their best to spell while encountering “sabotages” from the audience (such as spelling words backwards or performing hidden talents), increasingly more ridiculous head-to-head games, and all sorts of antics that make this a truly unique and hilarious fundraiser.

And that’s not all, Sunday night will be capped with a very special performance by members of Yonder Mountain String Band, Leftover Salmon, surprise guests, plus Woodshed Red! This send-off event will be open to the public on a donation basis and is limited capacity.

Leftover Salmon formed in 1989 when members of two Colorado-based bands that occasionally jammed with one another, Vince Herman’s Salmon Heads joined forces with Drew Emmitt’s Left Hand String Band to play a New Year’s Eve show at the Eldo, a live music venue in Crested Butte. 

Now, 30 years later, they are still swimming strong and are celebrating full-tilt boogie with the event “30 Years Under the Big Top” on New Years Eve at the new Mission Ballroom, a circus-themed extravaganza with With Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe and Lindsay Lou, in Denver, Colorado on December 31. 5280 Magazine says, “This Is the New Year’s Eve Show You Won’t Want to Miss,” and 30 Years Under The Big Top is the box set you won’t want to miss out on getting. 

This custom box set is a limited edition commemorating 30 years as a band. It includes 10 complete records including all studio albums: Bridges To Bert [1993], Ask The Fish [1995], Euphoria [1997], Nashville Sessions [1999], LIVE [2002], Leftover Salmon [2004], Aquatic Hitchhiker [2012], High Country [2014], Something Higher [2018], From The Living Room Vol. 1 [2019].

The set will also include bonus tracks and previously unreleased music and a 24-page full color booklet all contained in a custom cigarette style box with matte finish and magnetic closure with hand-drawn art by Gary Houston. It is a very limited edition and each set is signed and numbered by Drew Emmitt and Vince Herman. It ships in early 2020.

Sticks N’ Thorns is the new project from Leftover Salmon banjoist Andy Thorn and flatpicking guitarist Jon Stickley of the Jon Stickley Trio. Since their teenage years together in North Carolina, Andy and Jon have played together in numerous bands including the Broke Mountain Bluegrass Band (with Anders Beck of Greensky Bluegrass, and Travis Book of The Infamous Stringdusters). At the 2019 Telluride Bluegrass Festival summer Broke Mountain reunited amid rabid excitement (mostly their own). This was slightly more epic than the open mic nights the two had played together back in Durham. 

Today, both Jon and Andy are prominent members of the Jam Grass scene (and still best friends), despite divergent musical paths. Jon stayed in North Carolina and briefly played mandolin with Asheville favorites The Biscuit Burners. Shortly afterwards, he formed his own group, the Jon Stickley Trio, which has been praised by both NPR and the New York Times for the band’s boundary-defying bluegrass. 

Meanwhile, Andy enjoyed a stint in Larry Keel and Natural Bridge, then relocated to Colorado, where he joined the Emmitt-Nershi Band (with Bill Nershi of the String Cheese Incident, and Drew Emmitt of Leftover Salmon). Soon, Andy joined Leftover Salmon, ending the band’s multi-year hiatus. Leftover Salmon had just been waiting, it turned out, for their “missing banjo link.” Since then, the band has released multiple studio albums, using Andy’s original songs as the title tracks.

Sticks N’ Thorns is for everyone who wants to see what happens when two childhood friends reunite to bring everything they’ve learned from their music careers — and from life on the road —  to their new musical hijinks. Get ready for old-school classics, buddy shenanigans, and genre-defying bluegrass.

Here is a note from Greg Garrison about “Songs You’ve Left Unsung”:

I first met Jeff Austin when we were in 7th grade. Through the 80’s and 90’s, we somehow always wound up in the same places at the same times…Rolling Meadows, IL as kids, Decatur and Urbana, IL during our college years, and eventually Colorado as adults. And then, maybe predictably, as members of touring bands in the same scene.

“Songs You’ve Left Unsung” is a reflection on some of these times…the verses move chronologically, starting in Illinois and winding up in Colorado. The chorus is meant to be bittersweet but also hopeful for those of us that are still here writing songs, experiencing music, raising families and living life with all of its turbulent ups and downs.

I wanted to release the song with Backline because I think their mission is exceptionally important; providing mental health and wellness support to people in the music industry while also providing an opportunity for those of us who deal with issues like depression, anxiety, and substance abuse to share our stories. Hopefully, these stories will provide comfort, clarity, support, inspiration and a helping hand to anyone who is in need.

On a personal note, I have always struggled with a certain amount of social anxiety (not the easiest thing when you’re in a band like Leftover Salmon); the kind of anxiety that makes you feel like you’re always in the way, that folks don’t really want to hear what you have to say, play or sing, always looking for a way out of conversations because “this person doesn’t really want to be talking to me anyway…”. It makes being a musician, which involves a healthy amount of“putting yourself out there” a difficult task at times. Thankfully, when the music is happening and I’m playing the bass, I can close my eyes, quiet my mind and feel at home.

I discovered that I suffer from low-level depression (called dysthymia) during one of my most difficult periods as a human and as a musician. When I parted ways with Punch Brothers in 2008, a lot of things came crashing down. While my amazing third child (Ella) had just been born, I was also in the midst of a crumbling marriage, had no steady gig or income (Leftover Salmon was still just waking up from its hiatus), and the band that I had put so much time, effort, and soul into was moving in a different direction. Lots of stress…lots of anger…lots of confusion…lots of self-doubt…lots of hopelessness. I know many musicians can relate to this scenario, it’s certainly not a unique one in our industry.

Fortunately, through counseling, I was able to get my proverbial “shit together” to some extent, and I started taking medication (which I still take to this day). It’s hard to admit you need help. I’m glad that I did. I was lucky enough to have some honest people around me who recognized what I was going through and pushed me to make changes.

Like many, I certainly wish I would have understood the extent to which Jeff was hurting, and that I could have given him a helping hand when it was needed. I’m glad that an organization like Backline exists now, as having the support of others who have gone through or are going through a similar situation will allow the healing to start and leave far fewer songs left unsung.

DENVER, CO — First coming together on a late October evening when Vince Herman wandered into the Walrus Saloon in Boulder, Colorado, after being enticed by a sign reading “Bluegrass Music Here Tonight,” and met Drew Emmitt, whose band was playing that night, the pair have been reshaping the musical landscape ever since. First at house parties and the campgrounds at festivals, then in Emmitt’s bluegrass outfit the Left Hand String Band, before coming together and forming the legendary roots band Leftover Salmon on New Years Eve thirty years ago.

Since then, these two have been blazing new musical paths with Leftover Salmon, taking the music at their core, rock ‘n’ roll, folk, bluegrass, Cajun, soul, zydeco, jazz and blues, and crafting it into something new that has spawned a legion of bands in their wake. With their unpredictable approach in a live setting, their willingness to take chances by fusing disparate musical styles together and their incorporation of non-traditional bluegrass covers into their repertoire, Leftover Salmon has pushed that progressive bluegrass sound they were originally influenced by to the next level. Instead they are firmly settled in the long lineage of bands that defy simple categorization, always setting their own musical agenda.

The two long-time collaborators are hitting the road for a rare run of acoustic-duo shows performed in intimate settings that will celebrate over thirty years of musical friendship. Each night will be a journey through the pair’s long history and touch on all realms of their vast musical catalog including everything from well-known favorites to long-forgotten gems, and everything in between.

DENVER, CO —Few bands stick around for thirty years. Even fewer bands leave a legacy during that time that marks them as a truly special, once-in-lifetime type band. And no band has done all that and had as much fun as Leftover Salmon. NPR’s Mountain Stage says, “One of the most fun-loving bands you’ll encounter, Leftover Salmon has built a fervent audience with an insatiable thirst for living, and re-living, its energetic live performances,” while Offbeat calls them, “One of the most spirited, jovial bands of the jam band nation.” 

Since their earliest days as a forward thinking, progressive bluegrass band who had the guts to add drums to the mix and who was unafraid to stir in any number of highly combustible styles into their ever evolving sound, to their role as a pioneer of the modern jamband scene, to their current status as elder-statesmen of the scene who cast a huge influential shadow over every festival they play, Leftover Salmon has been a crucial link in keeping alive the traditional music of the past while at the same time pushing that sound forward with their own weirdly, unique style.

Leftover Salmon’s Vince Herman says, “A long strange swim it’s been for salmon. Through many incarnations, losses, joys, festivals, bars, barns, mountains, rivers, oceans, benefits, weddings, and goat yoga sessions; we have kept the big ball rolling with a love of music and each other to keep ourselves plowing ahead the only way we know how. The band formed in 1989 when members of two Colorado-based bands that occasional jammed with one another, Vince Herman’s Salmon Heads joined forces with Drew Emmit’s Left Hand String Band to play a New Year’s Eve show at the Eldo, a live music venue in Crested Butte. As the story goes, a couple of members of the Salmon Heads couldn’t make the drive from Boulder, so they recruited members of the Left Hand String Band to join in for the festivities.

The Salina Journal writes, “Leftover Salmon wasn’t meant to last more than one night, much less still be cooking 30 years later… [Since then] The band has recorded multiple bestselling albums and has been an influence on a younger generation of folk-rock and bluegrass bands.”

Author Tim Newby tells the tale in his new book Leftover Salmon: Thirty Years of Festival! which was published February 2019 by Rowman & Littlefield. Here is an excerpt:

“One of the clearest memories I have is driving to the gig with Drew and thinking, ‘Man, this is cool,’” says Herman. “This is the start of something new.” Emmitt and Herman, who were riding to the show together in Emmitt’s truck, were discussing what to call this conglomeration of the Left Hand String Band and the Salmon Heads, when Herman in a moment of pure simplistic, inspiration blurted out, “Leftover Salmon.” A solution so straightforward and simple it made perfect sense. Combine the names of the two bands and move on. Emmitt reflects on that burst of inspiration he has lived with ever since. “We laughed and said, ‘Okay.’ We didn’t think it was going to turn into anything at that point. We thought we were just going to be together for that gig.” Herman agrees, “I really thought it’d only last one gig.” Despite this uncertainty of this new band’s future for Herman, the drive to the show was filled with much optimism about the future for the two young musicians. Perhaps it was the impending New Year or the wide-open possibilities looming ahead for both. Herman states, “There was a definite sense of onward to the future going into that gig we both felt on the ride there.”

Heading into their fourth decade Leftover Salmon is showing no signs of slowing down as they are coming off the release of their most recent album, Something Higher (released in 2018), which has been universally hailed as one of the band’s finest releases. Something Higher shows how even upon preparing to enter their fourth decade Leftover Salmon is proving it possible to recreate themselves without changing who they are. Billboard writes, “By blending so many elements of two-step, rock ‘n’ roll, bluegrass and more, they’re able to repeatedly maintain a fresh sound, no matter how many years pass.”

The band now features a line-up that has been together longer than any other in Salmon history and is one of the strongest the legendary band has ever assembled. Built around the core of founding members Drew Emmitt and Vince Herman, the band is now powered by banjo-wiz Andy Thorn, and driven by the steady rhythm section of bassist Greg Garrison, drummer Alwyn Robinson, and keyboardist Erik Deutsch.

BOULDER, CO — After a decade of touring and three studio albums with legendary jam band Leftover Salmon, banjoist Andy Thorn is releasing his first solo recording in eight years, Frontiers Like These, on June 21 at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. To make this album, Thorn called in his oldest friends, who now happen to be in meteoric acoustic bands, including members of Mandolin Orange, Town Mountain, Jon Stickley Trio, and Big Fat Gap.

The song tells the story of America’s first licensed pot broker, who also happens to be his wife, Cecelia May Thorn. “Blazing New Frontiers” is an ode to the people who built the cannabis industry, who tried to find their way in an increasingly corporate landscape. The video, directed by award-winning director Eric Abramson, was shot in the facilities of her actual former clients, 14er Holistics’ Grow. It depicts Andy performing in an indoor grow room while Cecelia acts out her pot brokering business throughout Boulder, with cameo appearances by members of Leftover Salmon.

Denver’s Westword call it “an amusing peek into the zany ins and outs of Colorado’s most famous business.” In the Westword interview about the song, which is based an old poem written by Cecelia, Thorn says, “It’s a salute to all the growers and people who helped pioneer the industry… Some of the words are ‘You can’t grow a plant without a radio tag/You can’t sell a pound without a barcode bag,’ and the chorus goes, ‘You can call us crooks and gangsters/But we’ll still be pioneers/We’re the first state to go legal/We’re blazing new frontiers.’”

Written and produced by Andy Thorn, Frontiers Like These features 11 original tracks including four instrumental numbers and seven vocal tracks featuring lush harmonies by Emily Frantz and Andrew Marlin of Mandolin Orange. The lyrics and soundscapes capture a snapshot of American life — from North Carolina to the Rocky Mountains and beyond. Inevitably, the album references climate change and economic inequality. The album also features Jon Stickley on guitar, Town Mountain’s Bobby Britt on fiddle, and Big Fat Gap’s Miles Andrews on bass, the decades of Carolina-based picking friendships are palpable from the first notes.

Frontiers Like These was recorded in the musicians’ hometown of Chapel Hill at The Rubber Room. It was done over the holidays, so everyone was back in town visiting family. The recording sessions felt like a Carolina bluegrass family reunion, but most of these songs were actually written at 7300 feet above sea level, in Thorn’s high-altitude Colorado home.
