BRECKENRIDGE BREWERY TEAMS UP WITH COLORADO BLUEGRASS BAND LEFTOVER SALMON
Handcrafted Music Deserves Handcrafted Beer.

NEW Song “High Country” Available This July Through Breck Brew Download Cards
Accompanied with an Artist Series Coaster and Contests

Breckenridge Brewery of Colorado has a big fish on the line. The brewery recently announced it has teamed up with Colorado bluegrass band Leftover Salmon to deliver new music to fans exclusively through Breckenridge beers. Leftover Salmon will debut four original songs from July to October, and they will be pre-released exclusively through Breckenridge Brewery’s 12-pack Sampler Packs. Song download codes will be provided on four collector’s item Artist Series coasters packaged within Sampler Packs.

LoS_PRessShot_FOrBREck“These new Leftover Salmon songs are inspired by Breckenridge Brewery’s Fine Colorado Ales, the Colorado lifestyle, and the beauty that Colorado has to offer,” said Breckenridge Brewery’s Marketing Director Todd Thibault. “It makes perfect sense to package these songs with our beers and give folks the full Colorado experience!”

National touring act Leftover Salmon was formed in Colorado in 1989. The slamgrass pioneers created one of the first bluegrass bands to add drums and tour rock & roll bars, helping it become a pillar of the jam band scene and an unwitting architect of the jam grass genre.

Each of four song downloads will be released alongside an Artist Series coaster, specially created by four well-known artists from the “Rock Art” community and packaged inside Breckenridge Brewery’s 12-pack Sampler Packs. Gary Houston, Jeff Wood, Nate Duval and Tyler Stout each crafted their artwork with inspiration from Leftover Salmon’s music and Breckenridge Brewery’s beers. In addition to the coasters, each artist is printing a limited run of 100 screen print posters. The posters will be available through select giveaways on social media and at special events across the country.

The Artist Series song download coasters will begin shipping in specially marked Breckenridge Brewery 12-pack Sampler Packs in July. Sampler Pack purchasers will not only receive 12 bottles of Breckenridge beer, but also an Artist Series coaster, a free song download and a chance to win prizes – every download that is retrieved enters that person in a drawing. The grand prize is a trip for two to Colorado for a VIP experience at Leftover Salmon’s Thanksgiving shows, with a behind-the-scenes Breckenridge Brewery tour and a band meet-and-greet. Other prizes include a band-autographed acoustic guitar made by Andrew White Guitars, which builds Vince Herman his guitars; a set of four Artist Series coaster posters, framed and signed by the band; and much more.

The first Leftover Salmon download song available this month is “High Country.” The song was recorded between March 25 and April 4, 2013 at Mighty Fine Productions in Denver. It was produced by Steve Berlin of Los Lobos; engineered by Mario Casilio; and mixed and mastered by Dave McNair. The song features Joey Porter on organ.

“I wrote this song while on a hike in the Collegiate Peaks wilderness,” remembered Leftover Salmon band member Andy Thorn. “It was such a beautiful day up there I just started singing, ‘I wanna be in the high country all day,’ and having fun making up verses about it.  By the time we got back to the cabin and grabbed a guitar it was basically finished!”

HighCountr2Gary Houston of Voodoo Catbox created the accompanying artwork. Houston is based in Portland, OR and specializes in scratch board illustrations, which he appreciates as being hands-on and organic. He also screen prints, and scratch board lends itself to this process very well.

“When I was approached to work on this project, my initial thoughts were of outdoors, summer and water, and the idea that water is such a pivotal point in making beer,” reflected Houston. “I wanted the image to have a mystical quality… Mountains, trees, churning water and salmon with spawning on their minds, in a mystical setting.” For more details of Houston’s image and inspiration, click here.

This summer and fall Breckenridge Brewery is planning promotions in select bars throughout the country that coincide with Leftover Salmon’s tour stops. The events will not only provide fans a chance to collect the Artist Series song download coasters and limited edition Artist Series posters, but also will include special appearances by Leftover Salmon. Dates and cities will be posted online at http://www.breckbrew.com/LeftoverSalmon.

“Imagine having the opportunity to drink a beer with some of the best musicians to come out of Colorado, pick up a free song download and an autographed limited edition poster,” concluded Thibault. “I can’t think of a better way to spend a summer evening.”

For fans who are not able to receive song download coasters, ‘High Country’ will be released via iTunes on August 6th as will the other songs at later dates.

This is YOUR chance to WIN FREE TICKETS to the YARD DOGS ROAD SHOW at THE ORANGE PEEL this Friday, October 1st! All you have to do is post a comment to this blog of why YOU should win the tickets below and you are entered to win a pair.

Local Asheville absurdist gypsy folk funk punk band Sirius. B will be opening for the evening! What a GREAT pairing!

The Yard Dogs Road Show is a hobo cabaret, a living patchwork of vaudeville and rock and roll. They lead the modern hobohemian on a visual and sonic journey through part of history that may or may not have existed – followed by an ambitious return to the emotional challenges of our punch-drunk contemporary world. It’s a true story on stage: sword swallowers, dancing dolls, fire eaters and sunset hobo poetry – all animated by the live sounds of the Yard Dogs cartoon heavy band. Yard Dogs Road Show is pure visual and sonic voodoo.

LAAFF it up: tips for a freaky fringe festival’s t-shirt design tips:

The Lexington Arts and Fun Festival (LAAFF) is an annual indie street festival in Asheville, NC. LAAFF is looking for a new t-shirt design to sell to attendees and spread the word. LAAFF is a nonprofit community endeavor, so the winning design helps fund more community-focused fun.

LAAFF is a freaky, fringe-y, family-friendly celebration of Asheville’s artistic and musical communities. It fills three city blocks with local art, food, beer, music, street performers and random acts of creativity. Multiple stages showcase rock and roll, indie pop, funk, folk, ragtime, reggae, worldbeat,  bluegrass, old time and African drumming. Also on hand are clowns, magicians, contortionists, belly dancers, modern dancers, vaudeville actors, hula-hoopers,bicycle-jousters and more.

To help you better understand the festival, Creative Allies spoke with two of its organizers, Erin and Kitty, asking them questions about the design they’re looking for.

Please tell our designers three VERY SPECIFIC things designers should think about when creating your design:

* We want to convey the idea of quality, inspired creativity

* A life filled with art and fun, love and diversity; freedom of expression

* Deeply unique images that express an alternative-culture approach

“My ideal design is” (give us two or three short phrases that describe what you really want):

* explosive creative expression, surprise, fringe, music and art

* heartfelt connection to life, the joy and power of creativity

* collaborative spirit, community

I suggest designers to stay away from (specific things that really turn me off)

* swoosh people

* literal art or music  images, (paintbrushes, pallettes, music notes)

* clip art; a prepackaged look

Do you have images or video that would inspire our designers?

WANTED by An Honest Tune: “White male, squirrelly hair, known to make strange mouth noises, last seen with the bluegrass Bonnie and Clyde. He is known to make even the whitest man dance; approach at your own will. ”

Keller and the Keels are still on the Lam….

They’ve run through the woods,

and shortly thereafter, David Shehi and  Josh Mintz from an Honest Tune caught up to them to steal some time to talk about Thief:

Here’s part of the interview explaining how Keller and the Keels met:

Honest Tune: (To Keller) You have a new record out with Larry and Jenny Keel. Would you mind giving a brief introduction to The Keels – how you guys came together, and how the whole creative process has grown to the force that it is now?

Keller Williams: We have now known each other for years and this is our second record together withthe last one being Grass in 2006. I met the Keels back in the early ’90s in a bar in my hometown of Fredricksburg, Virginia, and Larry was playing with a group called Fizzawah,  which was a side project to Mcgraw Gap, which is another amazing bluegrass band. I was a fan of that group andgot to open for them and play with them some.

Then Larry and I just kept in touch over the years. Larry and Jenny are just real. Collaborating with them is just so natural. They bring an authenticity to my world, as far as the bluegrassthing goes. They are so authentically steeped in the bluegrass world andin all honesty, I am simply appreciative that they have sunk to my level.  (Laughs)

Honest Tune: (To Larry) Andwhat was your original impression of Keller?

Larry Keel: Well, Ihad been hearing about him and my recollection of the meeting is entirely the same. Everything that I had ever heard about him was how hard of a worker he was, particularly in the Virginia area. Then I met him and I was like, “I like what this guy has got going on.” It is totally unique, and it is his ownthing, which is something that I have always tried to do in terms of having my ownsound.

Since then, my respect has remained in the utmost of ways. He has stayed on his own path, doing his own thing steadfastly. Then there is the simple fact that he is just a good guy who has become one of our very best friends.

…. and now they may even up on YOUR COUCH. Find out how:
