After 10 Years, The Band of Heathens Find Their Stride
New Music in 2016

Celebrating ten years together, The Band of Heathens is set to embark on a banner year with founding members Ed Jurdi (guitar, keys, vocals) and Gordy Quist (guitar, vocals) along with Trevor Nealon (keys, vocals), Richard Millsap (drums, vocals) and Scott Davis (bass, vocals). Fresh off the boat from the SiriusXM Outlaw Country Cruise, this Austin, TX based world class rock n roll outfit has two new releases slated for 2016. The Green Grass EP premieres four new BOH originals and a faithful cover of The Band’s “Bessie Smith, featuring Joe Fletcher, and will be followed by their 8th full length album tentatively slated for release in September.

In the coming months, they will be performing a number of showcases at SXSW, sailing the high seas aboard Kid Rock’s 7th Annual Chillin’ The Most Cruise, hitting select markets in the Rockies, Midwest and the Southeast and are set to return to The Ride Festival in Telluride, CO with Pearl Jam and many others later in the year. For their spring and summer 2016 tours, fans will receive a free digital download of the five-song limited edition EP, Green Grass, with all advance ticket purchases. The CD version will only be available at their shows and in the web store: www.bandofheathens.com/music.

For a limited time anyone can download the title track for free at http://bit.ly/BOH_GreenGrass_2016.

BoH EPcover2016b

The EP is a return to the kaleidoscopic rock n roll sound that the band has fearlessly forged over the course of their ten-year career. Seamlessly blending country, and R&B, on tracks like “DC9” or integrating lyrical prose with rock n roll and pop sensibilities on “Out On Each Other”, the music showcases the combustible creative chemistry of the band’s current lineup. “There’s a deeper sense of exploration on these tracks that feels really special,” remarks Gordy Quist.” I think it’s the best the band has ever sounded, and I think it’s a good reflection of where we are right now.”

Both new releases for 2016 feature the sonic shift in the band, straying further into their roots to harness the rollicking energy of their live shows, and away from the more folk/singer-songwriter direction which they took with their 2013 release Sunday Morning Record. The new album also shows some new geographic influences with some of the recordings being done in Asheville, Austin, and Nashville.

Head for The Hills On Tour Summer of 2014
Including stops at Summer Camp, Denver Botanic Gardens, Planet Bluegrass and more
Shows with The Steep Canyon Rangers, Nickel Creek, and Yonder Mountain String Band

From Telluride Bluegrass Festival to SxSW and all points beyond – Head for the Hills creates a sound based in bluegrass that reaches into indie rock, jazz, hip hop, world and folk to stitch together fresh songs that bridge the divide between past and future acoustic music. Bluegrass Today said they are “On top of modern string music.”

Head for the Hills is Adam Kinghorn (Guitar), Michael Chappell (Mandolin), Joe Lessard (Fiddle), and Matt Loewen (Bass). The quartet recently released their third studio album, Blue Ruin, of which CMT’s Edge said it “effortlessly matches integrity against innovation.” The album also charted in the CMJ Top 200.

Today, they are thrilled to announce the premier of their newest music video for the song “Never Does”from Blue Ruin. Written by Joe Lessard, “Never Does” is a driving pop infused song about love and loss. It is a pulsing, minor-key tale about a lack of fulfillment and closure told with a rapid-fire vocal delivery. Subtle audio effects and haunting background vocals add to the unceasing and urgent sense of anxiety within the track. They are also offering the song as a free download at: http://bit.ly/H4TH_NeverDoes.

Head for the Hills will also be on the road this summer beginning with an appearance at Pickin’ on the Poudre at the Mishawaka Amphitheatre on May 17th. The end of May brings them to Illinois for Summer Camp Music Festival, The Revival Festival in Minnesota, and the Campout for the Cause in Bond CO.  They pick back up in mid-June with Vaudeville Mews (IA), Love Fest in the Midwest (NE), Fly Me to the Moon Saloon (in Telluride and featuring special guest Anders Beck from Greensky Bluegrass), and Clear Creek RapidGrass in Idaho Springs. In July they are set to play Camp Euforia (IA), Dawg Daze of Summer (MO), and a co-bill with The Steep Canyon Rangers at the Denver Botanic Gardens. August has them at the Mohawk Valley Music Fest (OR) and supporting Nickel Creek at the Festival at Sandpoint. They will also be at Yonder Mountain String Band’s Kinfolk celebration in Lyons this September and the Boats and Bluegrass Festival (MN). More tour dates will be announced as the season progresses, so please stay tuned to headforthehillsmusic.com.

Head for the Hills has performed and appeared at many premier festivals and radio programs including Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Wakarusa Music Festival, SxSW, NPR-Ideastream, eTown, High Sierra Music Festival, RockyGrass and several more. They also appeared on the River’s Rising Flood Compilation to benefit Colorado Flood victims alongside: Furthur, Widespread Panic, Devotchka amongst others. The band was named “Best of Colorado” for 4 consecutive years via Westword Music Showcase (Denver, CO) and also co-released a craft beer with one of USA Today’s “Top 15 Craft Beer Breweries” – Odell Brewing Co.

John Cloyd Miller (Red June) Wins 2013
MerleFest’s Chris Austin Songwriting Contest

“Cloud of Dust” Places #1 in Bluegrass Category

John Cloyd Miller won first place in the 21st annual Chris Austin Songwriting Contest in the bluegrass category at MerleFest 2013. Miller is a vocalist, guitarist and mandolin player for the Asheville-based band, Red June, a nationally touring acoustic Americana trio that includes his wife, fiddler and vocalist Natalya Weinstein, and multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Will Straughan. The winning song, “Cloud of Dust,” appears on Red June’s 2012 sophomore release, Beauty Will Come.

“‘Cloud of Dust’ highlights the frustrations and resolve of a young man during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s.” John says, “This song tells the story of what happens when we abuse our land.” Red June kicked off 2013 with the release of a music video for the song which features powerful archival footage from the Dust Bowl.

Acclaimed NC traditional musician, Riley Baugus, says, “John’s music reminds me of being in the Blue Ridge Mountains, high on a hill all alone and hearing the sound of the mountains coming from all around and filling your soul with the feeling that everything is just right in that place. His voice is strong and pure and harkens back to a time when there was no need for electronic enhancement and tuning adjustments. In short, John is the real thing and is just incredible.”

The Chris Austin Songwriting Contest offers songwriters the opportunity to have their original songs heard by a panel of professional songwriters and others from the Nashville music industry. The 2013 winners were chosen from more than 700 entries. Winners in the Bluegrass category included 1st Place – John Cloyd Miller’s “Cloud of Dust” (Asheville, NC); 2nd Place – Todd Grebe’s “Master of My Destiny”  (Nashville, Tenn.); and 3rd Place – Aaron Burdett’s “Magpie (Saluda, NC). Previous winners of the Chris Austin Songwriting Contest include Gillian Welch, Tift Merritt, Michael Reno Harrell, Adrienne Young, Martha Scanlan, David Via and Johnny Williams.

“The talent this year was amazing!” says Laurie Brintle-Jarvis, coordinator of the Chris Austin Songwriting Contest. “They gave an inspirational performance on the Cabin Stage on Friday evening, sharing their talents and enthusiasm with the crowd.” For more details about the contest, visit www.MerleFest.org/ChrisAustinSongwritingContest.

In 2012, Red June made their MerleFest debut, performing at the 25th anniversary festival. Later that year they released their second full-length album, Beauty Will Come, and performed at numerous shows and festivals across the country including Music City Roots, Suwannee Springfest, Beartrap Summer Festival, and Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival. The band was selected for an official showcase at The Station Inn in Nashville at the Americana Music Association conference, and was featured in the October 2012 issue of Southern Living magazine with Douglas Rogers writing, “Bands like Old Crow Medicine Show, The Avett Brothers, and Red June have recently put the sounds of Appalachia back on the map.”

A native of Hickory, NC, Miller’s musical background includes deep roots in bluegrass. A self-taught musician, he grew up listening to his grandfather, legendary bluegrass fiddler and NC Folk Heritage Award winner, Jim Shumate. After graduating from Appalachian State University, Miller moved to Utah and joined the bluegrass band Lo-Fi Breakdown. Eventually the band relocated to Asheville, NC, and continued to perform until early 2009. Around that same time, Miller, Weinstein, and Straughan formed Red June (named after an heirloom apple variety), a group that emphasizes songwriting while combining elements of bluegrass, old-time, country and American roots music.

“Beauty Will Come by Red June just may be the most stunningly gorgeous country album in years. Everything about it: from the exquisite three-part harmonies and acoustic loveliness of the mandolin, fiddle, guitar and upright bass…This is the epitome of Americana…” says Mike Greenblatt with Rant’n’Roll Aquarian Weekly.

FREE Download of “Prohibition Rose” by Ashleigh Flynn
from A Million Stars – Due Out May 14, 2013

“This song is about Portland’s own most infamous bootlegger during prohibition, who happened to be a woman… known for shanghaiing unsuspecting patrons.” –Ashleigh Flynn

“Prohibition Rose” Lyrics:
Prohibition Rose, knows what she knows,
From her hips to her toes – beneath her petticoat!
All day and into night, sailors while their time away
In her opium dens spending all their pay
Swilling her booze as they wait…

From Old Town to Old Shanghai,
the boys wake up under another sky!
They know how and they can’t ask why
When they wake from sleep in their bare feet
Shackled on a ship to the Far East.

Stumptown’s fairest queen, a
Denizen of the underground scene.
Rosie’s got the guile to get you a little high.
But not drop of hooch around
When the cops bust in like a pack of hounds.
Just Rosie readin’ from her bible –
With all the Whiskey stashed underneath her skirt…

From Old Town to Old Shanghai…

Daylight_446_byJolieLorenHappy Valentine’s Day! John Driskell Hopkins is offering a free download of  “Be My Girl” off his new album DAYLIGHT for this special occasion ❤

“I sang ‘Be My Girl’ to my wife at our wedding and gave it to our guests on disc at the reception. She means everything to me. It’s her song in every way,” says John.

BE MY GIRL

In the arms of gentle beauty
In the throes of auburn hair
I could babble on for hours
And sleep right through your stare On that corner off of Tharpe Street Where I used to run and hide

I had visions in our passion That compel me to decide

To love you forever
To call you my own
To make you my lover
To make you my home To build our own family To take on the world You’d make me so happy If you would be my girl

There’s a path in Cinque Terra Lovers carve their hearts in stone Where I gazed out over heaven And thought of you alone

When the sun fell through the water I stood and wrung my hands
Crying “Lord show me compassion And let me be the man”

I’m crazy about you, baby

I keep dreaming of our future I keep whispering your name I know my precious treasures You hold all of them

I’ve been counting every heartbeat I’ve been burning in my skin
Every second is a lifetime
So, baby take my hand

Shannon Whitworth & Barrett Smith Release “Bring It On Home” TODAY
A Duo Album Featuring:
The Songs of Paul Simon to A.C. Jobim to Sam Cooke

In celebration they are offering a FREE DOWNLOAD
of their version of Sam Cooke’s “Bring it on Home to Me”

Bring it On Home makes the perfect Holiday Gift, attractive to folks across multiple generations. Get it here: http://barrettsmith.com/listenbuy.cfm and also on iTunes

Here is what the press is saying about Bring it on Home:

“From start to finish, Bring it on Home is crafted with love… a timeless collection” —Alli Marshall, Mountain Xpress

“The songs on here definitely hit the mark and bring back many memories. The duo slays the opening cut, and in doing so, reveal a secret in doing a cover – sometimes it’s not about changing a song to reflect your personality, or “making it your own,” it’s simply a case of letting the song  be front and center – which they do rather well here.” —Chuck Dauphin, Music News Nashville

“Smith’s voice is a perfect complement to Whitworth’s, whether he is taking lead, adding harmony background vocals or sharing the lead in a duet as on the album’s sweet midnight version of the jazz standard ‘Moonglow.’” —Jeff Eason, Boone Mountain Times

“Gentle trumpet, uke, fiddle, banjo and saxophone flourishes lend just the right layers to the songs, showcasing strong and deliberate vocals, crisp guitars and pianos, and arrangements without disrupting the smooth track-to-track flow. And the combination of voices here is heavenly, with Strong and Whitworth’s equally intimate, equally weary voices trading lead and harmony in true duo form.”  —Cover Lay Down

“Bring It On Home is that hidden diamond that may be the best recording to cross this desk all year.” –C. Michael Bailey, All About Jazz

Recorded in Asheville’s Echo Mountain Recording Studio with a team of talented friends and musicians from the Asheville area including Legendary drummer Jeff Sipe (Aquarium Rescue Unit, Leftover Salmon) and master multi-instrumentalist Mike Ashworth fas the core rhythm section. What the Press is Saying about “Leave the Bottle”

“I’m not sure what the definition of bluegrass would be in words alone, but if that definition was set to music, it would probably sound something like Town Mountain’s new Pinecastle Records release, Leave the Bottle… I could go on. There are no duds, and no filler songs on this project, which was produced by Mike Bub. But you get the point. This, my friends, is how bluegrass is supposed to sound.” —David Morris, Bluegrass Today

“Kudos to Town Mountain for keeping the traditional spirit of the genre alive while at the same time pushing the boundaries.” —Jeffrey Sisk, The Daily News

“It’s been a long and occasionally arduous climb, but the view from atop Town Mountain is starting to look mighty fine indeed.” —Steve Wildsmith, Daily Times

“On Bottle, that mix manifests itself in songs about everything from cabin fever (‘Greenbud on the Flower’) to double murders (‘Away From Home’)” —Ashley Melzer, Indy Week

“Town Mountain take a steady-handed approach to bluegrass, bass lines and guitars chugging along patiently as mandolin, fiddle and banjo add prickly texture to the higher registers.” —Jordan Lawrence, Shuffle

“Faithfully mirroring its Western North Carolina home base, the band Town Mountain blends traditional and progressive elements… They’ve written new songs about running from the law, songs about being on the road (involving the law), songs about love (more often being on the losing end of it), songs about the rat-race.” —Robin Tolleson, Bold Life

Town Mountain’s years of touring have created a mature well-traveled sound, a telepathic pickin’ style filled with mesmerizing interplay, and intoxicating rhythms that energize every tune. On Leave the Bottle, released TODAY, September 4th, the band presents 11 original band-member written tunes and one cover. One listen to their instantly memorable songs, and it’s plain to see why Grammy-winner Mike Bub would align with the group to produce Leave the Bottle as well as 2011’s Steady Operator, both released through Pinecastle Records. Banjo player extraordinaire and longtime member of the Sam Bush Band, Scott Vestal, also joined the team by engineering the new album, which was recorded at Digital Underground Studio in Nashville, TN.

Town Mountain is Phil Barker on mandolin & vocals, Robert Greer on lead vocals & guitar, Jesse Langlais on banjo & vocals, Bobby Britt on fiddle, and Jon Stickley rounds them out with his steady bass and rock-solid guitar & vocals.
