All proceeds will go directly to helping offset Billy’s medical expenses.

Asheville, NC — A large group of friends has come together in the bluegrass and acoustic music scene in the area to help our good buddy, Billy Constable, raise funds to offset his medical expenses for a brain tumor that he was recently diagnosed with.  The Grey Eagle is hosting the event on Sunday, December 11, 2011.  The doors open at 6pm, donations will be accepted, and there will also be a silent auction.  Bands performing are Big Daddy Bluegrass Band, Asheville Bluegrass Collective (featuring: members of Steep Canyon Rangers, Larry Keel & Natural Bridge and Town Mountain), Jason Burleson and the Bluegrass Buddies, and Nikki Talley.

Travers Chandler writes in Bluegrass Today, “Anyone familiar with the acoustic music scene of Western NC, or with the music of the legendary Charlie Moore, is no stranger to Billy Constable. In fact, I am not certain Billy encountered many strangers. He is a friend to many people, and to those of us fortunate to know him well, even a great mentor.”

Billy has been diagnosed with a lump on the lower portion of his brain which has been causing increasingly frequent seizures. He is currently seeing medical specialists and gathering evaluations. The expense is certain to be high, and Billy is without medical insurance. We are coming together here, as friends and fellow musicians, to help offset those costs.

Billy Constable grew up in a very musical family in Avery County, and he has been playing music for most of his life. Billy is part of Avery County’s Wiseman family, which includes a number of professional musicians including Scotty Wiseman, Lawrence Wiseman, David Wiseman, Fiddling Jimmy Wiseman, banjo picker Kent Wiseman, and Billy’s mother, Lois.

Billy began playing guitar professionally as a youngster with bluegrass great Charlie Moore, who had married Billy’s mother. He also played in Douglas Dillard’s newly formed “post Dillards” bluegrass band The Doug Dillard Band from Hollywood, which also featured Byron Berline and occasional guests like Vassar Clements and Sam Bush.

After touring with The Doug Dillard Band, Billy took a break from the road in order to work on his banjo skills while playing in a family’s band, The Constables, who were living in California at the time. He later had the opportunity to tour with two more bluegrass greats, Kenny Baker, a veteran fiddler from Bill Monroe’s Bluegrass Boys, and Josh Graves, a long time Dobro player with Flatt & Scruggs’ Foggy Mountain Boys.

Billy’s approach to the banjo is firmly rooted in Appalachian string music, but it can be deceptively eclectic. His influences begin at home and with his family, but Billy’s repertoire is vast, and he is comfortable in most musical situations. In addition to banjo, Billy is also an accomplished musician on the guitar, mandolin and violin.

In recent years, Billy has carried his banjo into more jam-oriented groups such as Acoustic Forum from New York and New England’s Max Creek. He toured extensively and recorded with Hypnotic Clambake and The Larry Keel Experience. Billy has appeared on many shows with Leftover Salmon, and he was also a featured guest on a handful of String Cheese Incident shows and one of their recent albums “Carnival 99.” Billy also played with the seasonal Big Daddy Bluegrass Band with Steve McMurray, Curtis Burch and Larry Keel.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~  MEET THE PERFORMERS   ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Big Daddy Bluegrass Band The Big Daddy Bluegrass Band rides again! It has been five long years since the BDBB has taken the stage. They make their return on February 11th at the Visulite Theater in Charlotte, NC, for the debut of the new lineup which features some of the premier acoustic musicians working today. Steve “Big Daddy” McMurry, front man and founding member of Acoustic Syndicate, returns to the world of bluegrass music with a formidable arsenal of hot, young pickers. Jason Flournoy, formerly of Larry Keel & Natural Bridge / Shanti Groove, is highly respected in all genres of music across the nation. Jay Sanders is the long time bass man for Acoustic Syndicate and former with Donna The Buffalo. He is one of the hardest working and most exciting upright bass men on the East coast. Producer, engineer and dobro virtuoso, Billy Cardine, formerly of The Biscuit Burners, is one of Jerry Douglass’ favorite new dobro men. He has shared the stage with Edgar Meyer at Carnegie Hall and his recordings are featured on the BBC, PBS and the History Channel. Robert Greer, front man of Asheville bluegrass band Town Mountain, will also be joining the band adding harmonizing vocals, guitar, and his charismatic stage presenc
Asheville Bluegrass Collective– The Asheville Bluegrass Collective is a super-group of Asheville’s finest bluegrass musicians. The pickers include: Jon Stickley and Robert Greer (Town Mountain), Mark Schimick (Larry Keel and Natural Bridge), Charles Humphrey (Steep Canyon Rangers), Jason Flournoy, and many more special guests! Look out for some solid Asheville style Bluegrass!
Jason Burleson – The original banjo player with Blue Highway, Jason is a native of Newland, North Carolina. A talented multi-instrumentalist, he brings all-around musicianship to the group, not the least of which is his distinctive, rock-solid banjo style. Writing for the Memphis Area Bluegrass Association,Betty Westmoreland observed about Jason and his habit of saying very little onstage: “His banjo does the talking, as is true of most superb performers. From Newland, NC, in Avery County, Burleson is part of that fine crop of North Carolina banjo players. There must be something about the air, or water, or the soil in that part of the country—so many fine banjo players seem to come out of those hills.”
Jason’s instrumental compositions form an integral part of the Blue Highway repertoire, including “The North Cove” ( Through the Window of a Train), hailed by one critic as “a burning instrumental with a sinuous melody” that offers “more to chew on than just the whiz-bang pyrotechnics of many modern bluegrass instrumentals” (Smoky Mountain News). Jason also anchors the group’s quartets with his bass vocals. A jazz devotee, Jason’s talent hasn’t been fully revealed yet to the bluegrass community and gives Blue Highway unlimited options for the future.
Jason will be leading a virtuosic group of bluegrass musicians featuring everyone’s favorite bluegrass buddy, David Via.
David Vias songs come from being raised and living up in the Blue Ridge mountains of Patrick County, Virginia. Via (as most folks call him – that’s pronounced Vi and rhymes with sky) is a well-known figure in bluegrass/newgrass circles with twenty-some odd years of singing and songwriting.
Via first performed Americana/Bluegrass with The Bluegrass Buddies with Alan Bibey and Ronnie Bowman. Over the years, Via has played in a lot of lineups and with a lot of great pickers: the newgrass In Sync – Jody King, James Donchez, Kim Gardiner, and Alan Purdue, the Dan River Revue – Wyatt Rice, Tommy Morse, Tim Jefferson, and Pete Ross. Via has joined the stage with Vassar Clemmens, Sammy Shelor, Ronnie Bowman, Tony Rice, and John Cowan. He currently teams up with two-time grammy winner Curtis Burch to perform more intimate shows and highlights his original material with award-winning musician friends who spin David Via & Corn Tornado.
Nikki Talley Hardworking, energetic, mountain girl with a big voice…these could all describe Nikki Talley. Raised in North Carolina and hailing from Asheville, it’s only fitting that her music is as eclectic as the state that boasts the mountains and the sea. Trying to pin down Nikki’s style, critics and reviewers alike have compared her to an early Liz Phair and Gillian Welch, but to leave the comparisons there would be doing a disservice to her fiery stage performance, hauntingly seductive and raw gritty lyrics, lifted by a voice that harkens back to the Appalachian roots from which she was born, and shores up on the edges of contemporary southern rock, country, blues, and jazz that has her audiences stomping and clapping for more.
Bobby Miller and The Virginia Dare Devils are authentic Appalachian “Blur Grass” from Asheville, NC, deeply rooted in traditional bluegrass, old time, and swing, with big family style vocals that sew it all together to create a well tailored musical garment unique in style and taste.
Named after the first person of European descent born in the new world, the Virginia Dare Devils’ moniker conjures the image of a culturally blended lifestyle that honors the amazing spirit of this legendary woman. Born in what is currently present day coastal North Carolina, Virginia Dare is said, in legend, to have wholeheartedly embraced the primitive culture of the Croatoan people after being abducted by them in 1590 along with the rest the settlers of what is known today as “The Lost Colony.”
Meet the DareDevils:
Bobby Miller: Mandolin-Lead Vocals
Born in Georgia in the sixties during the height of psychedelic radio pop Bobby always had a knack for anything musical.  After moving to Matthews he was exposed to his first note of Bluegrass music.  Somehow ending up landing in a suburban home next door to Country Music legend and Grand Old Opry Host George Hamilton IV.  “I’d stand on my back porch way past my bedtime and listen to the sounds of banjo and fiddle.”  He was more into bands like The Beatles, David Bowie and The Doors and the like.  Later in life, after hearing Old and In The Way, all that changed.  He took right to it and before he knew it, he was on stage and sharing his music with as many music lovers as possible.  That lead to his time with the Atlanta groups River Bottom Band and Cornfusion.  Then came the big move to Asheville, NC, and his touring with the Bluegrass/Americana group Boss Hawg.  Shortly after, in 2008, he formed The Virginia Dare Devils. After playing regional festivals and clubs for a year, and honing the music to a sharp edge, the group began work on their first recording, Brother Adieu.
Griff Martin: Guitar-Backup Vocals
Griff is widely accepted as one of the hottest young bluegrass guitar players in the region. His fluid and inventive style has been sharply honed from his early beginnings as a classical pianist to his current accomplishments as a Bluegrass guitar player. He has played and still does on occasion with such Bluegrass touring acts as The Darren Nicholson Band, and Buncombe Turnpike. His musical talent has taken him nationwide as well as overseas. In addition to his accomplished guitar playing, he may be found playing Bluegrass Banjo, Mandolin and even Electric Guitar.
Jason Flournoy: Banjo
Jason began his brilliant musical career with the Colorado based Shanti Groove.  After touring the country with Shanti Groove, he attracted the attention of flatpicking genius Larry Keel which led to a four year stint as the banjo player for Larry Keel and Natural Bridge.  Jason’s solid melodic style fits the Virginia Dare style like a glove.
Tim Gardner: Fiddle
Hailing from Brevard, NC comes from primarily an old-time fiddle background, but has also ventured into other genres that include country, Celtic, swing, classical, and of course, bluegrass. He learned many of the fiddle and dance tunes in his repertoire from his parents, Lo and Mary Gordon, who are well-established figures in the old-time music community. Tim has traveled to fiddler’s conventions performing with his family since he was the age of seven and has won or placed in many fiddle competitions throughout North Carolina and in his native state of Florida. In addition to being a recording engineer and session musician, Tim frequently takes side work performing and/or recording with various WNC artists including Shannon Whitworth, Bobby Powell & Tim Jones, Allison Williams, Lyndsay Wojcik and Nikki Talley. During the day, Tim works for his dad at Cedar Mountain Banjos building some of the finest open-back banjos on the market. One of his banjos is featured on A Greater Storm, which he plays on “Dance Around the Daisies”.
Rick Cooper: Upright Bass
Rick, or Coop, as he is known, is one of the premier multi instrumentalists on the scene today.  He is a graduate of the Bluegrass program at East Tennessee State University and has been with such bands as The Clear Liquor Pickers, Carolina Call Time, and Silver Dagger.  Not only is Coop a fantastic bass player, he’s also a wonderful guitar player.  In fact, he placed third in the Rocky Grass guitar competition two years in a row.  We’re thrilled to have this fine musician holding down the bottom for us.
The creation of innovative and original music is an ever elusive goal in this day and age. The Virginia DareDevils’ primary mission to do just that is certainly well under way. What’s the ideal way to survive those rugged snowy Colorado high mountain winters? If your last name is Herman, then the answer is you PLAY!
The Herman Clan is proud to announce their debut East Coast Tour! Hailing from the music infused—and snow clad—mountains of Colorado, they bring with them a flavor of life and Bluegrass in Nederland, CO. Not quite traditional, not quite modern, the trio recently opened for Tony Trischka at the historic Stage Stop Tavern.
The Herman Clan is a family band led by the one and only Vince Herman of Leftover Salmon & Great American Taxi. Vince sings and plays the mandolin and guitar, always doing what comes naturally to him: delivering unforgettable performances filled with witty humor, smooth guitar licks, and amazing improvised lyrics while pairing this all with amazingly strong song-writing and appreciation for traditional American music.
Teaming up with his sons Silas and Colin on guitar and upright bass, respectively, The Herman Clan delivers their own unique and tightly knit interpretation of traditional bluegrass, Americana and beyond. Silas—though young—is already making waves in the Colorado music scene. With close to ten thousand people looking on, Silas recently shredded the main stage at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival and at Red Rocks with LOS—how many 16 year olds can say that!? Colin rounds the trio out on stand-up bass, providing a solid steady foundation for the bands’ engaging picking adventures.
Together the Herman’s deliver a musical flavor all their own , fresh, inspired and all in the family! Come check ‘em out and see one of the best new sounds emerging from the high country of Colorado!
Keith Warren from Music News First just posted this review of Larry Keel and Natural Bridge’s album, Backwoods:
Backwoods Review:
by Keith Warren with Music New First
Fiddles, banjos, and true southern vocals…. OH MY! Larry Keel & Natural Bridge have created a wonderful sound and a truly enjoyable listening experience with “Backwoods”, produced by Larry Keel and Keller Williams. With combinations of strings, percussion, and vocals that border between southern twang and southern rock, this album is truly noteworthy.
Throughout the course of this album, you encounter many stories of questionable love, outsider’s opinions, and even songs with no vocals. Though some artists are merely talented vocally, Larry Keel & Natural Bridge prove that you don’t need words to get your point to the public. Strong string sounds coupled with spirited performers brings a simply astounding aspect of country and bluegrass for your listening pleasure.
Larry Keel & Natural Bridge are able to pull in listeners from various genres of music. With songs like “They” and “Ghost Driver” this phenomenal group of performers paints a vivid picture of life and what comes of it. Meanwhile, songs like “Bluegrass in the Backwoods” and “Bohemian Reel” allow you to relax and let the music take you to a place where no words are needed. Both the vocal tracks and the instrumental tracks on this album satisfy your craving for downhome bluegrass, as well as classic country. With 10 tracks on this album, you’ll be stimulated with unbelievable audio that will leave you wishing you had more!
All in all, Larry Keel & Natural Bridge has made it to the top of my recommendation list. You can find their album, along with show dates, booking information, and more at their website HERE. You can also contact them through MySpace, ReverbNation, Twitter, and Facebook. If you have iTunes or Rhapsody, you can also download their music through those specific programs. Whatever way you do it, make sure you pick up your copy of Larry Keel & Natural Bridge-“Backwoods”. I’m sure that you will enjoy it and quite possibly recommend it to your friends!
Larry Keel and Natural Bridge have got a fun weekend in store to celebrate Earthday. They are playing shows in Athens, Ohio; Martinsville, VA; Harrisonburg, VA, and Charlottesville, VA.
Here are a couple great interviews …
Let’s start with Thursday April 16th in Athens, Ohio and an interview with bassist Jenny Keel:
Larry Keel and Natural Bridge prepare for a weekend at Jackie O’s
Larry Keel and Natural Bridge will open the Almost Bluegrass Fest tomorrow night at Jackie O’s Pub and Brewery.
Keel and his band mates – Mark Schimick, Jason Flournoy and Jenny Keel – will share their eclectic style with Athens during the show. The band uses acoustic instruments including guitar, banjo, mandolin and upright bass.
The Post’s Bridget Mallon spoke with bassist Jenny Keel about the band’s music, its future plans and playing in Athens.
The Post: How would you describe Larry Keel and Natural Bridge’s style of music?
Jenny Keel: We’re a very powerful acoustic ensemble. We play original mountain music. It’s kind of like mountain rock music. It’s really high-energy, emotional and fun. It spans a lot of territory, all with acoustic instruments.
Post: What inspires Larry Keel and Natural Bridge songs?
Keel: Larry writes about everything. There’s historical topics, there’s mountain living, there’s philosophy, there’s family, moonshine, animals, love, war … anything with soul and magic inspires us musically.
Post: What do you hope people take away from your live shows?
Keel: I hope that they have a really good time and leave with a smile on their face and that they want to do it all over again together sometime.
Post: What is your favorite part of playing with Larry Keel and Natural Bridge?
Keel: Just connecting with people all across America and the world and having great honest encounters with people. Our mission every night is to have a good time with people and to go on a musical journxey together … and just to be open for anything that might develop.
Post: What are the band’s future plans?
Keel: To keep making magic as often as we can together as a band and together as human beings. Do something good every day, that’s our goal. Also keep writing music and working to create more music.
Post: Have you played in Athens before?
Keel: Oh yes, we’ve played several venues on the college campus and at festivals around the area. We love the local musicians, and we’re looking forward to getting back there.
Here is an interview with banjo player Jason Flournoy for Friday, April 16th in Martinsville, VA:
Bluegrass and more set Friday in concert at Rives
Wednesday, April 14, 2010
By ELIZA WINSTON – Bulletin Staff Writer
Jason Flournoy. Photo by Jon C Hancock
Guitarist Larry Keel and his band, Natural Bridge, are known for their bluegrass, but concert-goers can expect to hear much more when the group performs here Friday, said banjoist Jason Flournoy.
“We are a string band that looks like a bluegrass band, but we play just about everything,” Flournoy said. “It is hard to put the band in any certain category.” Keel, an award-winning musician and Virginia native, and Natural Bridge will play Friday at the Rives Theatre in uptown Martinsville. The concert is first sponsored by Friends of the Rives Theatre, a new volunteer group dedicated to preserving the uptown venue. It took over the theater on Jan. 1.
Flournoy, who has been on the bluegrass circuit for more than a decade, said the group plays everything from bluegrass and rock ’n’ roll to jazz and reggae. The audience can expect to hear music that “sounds like everything from Grandmaster Flash to Bill Monroe,” he said.
The performance will feature material off the band’s recent release, “Backwoods.” Keel and Natural Bridge’s performances are always high energy, and the band feeds off the energy of the audience, Flournoy said. ”If the crowd is ready to rock out,” he explained, “the band will be even more fired up.”
Keel, who was born in Manassas and lives in Natural Bridge, has been playing guitar since he was 7. At 18, he became a contracted musician to play bluegrass at the Tokyo Disneyland theme park in Japan for seven months. Since then, he has recorded several CDs, won first place at the guitar competition at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in Colorado, and has played at MerleFest in North Carolina and many other bluegrass festivals.
Natural Bridge, which formed in 2005, also includes Mark Schimick on mandolin and vocals and Keel’s wife, Jenny Keel, on upright bass and vocals. The band does about 130 shows a year, said Flournoy, who lives in Asheville, N.C. He said touring the Southeast is a lot easier than states such as Colorado, because shows are closer together on the East Coast.
You can also see a fun blurb here in the Roanoke Times.
Mandolin player Marck Schimick also went live on air for a tv interview in Martinsville this past Monday.
Then Saturday, LKNB heads on into Harrisonburg to play the Clementine and then on Sunday to a big Earthday event at the Charlottesville Pavillion.
it’s been an amazing couple of weeks for the Keel Krew-   we’ve become quite skilled at navigating the NOAA weather site… it’s the only chance we have of making it to our scheduled shows these days!  5 cancellations due to weather , in the past 3 months..  including, regretfully, the recent show at Mt. State Brewery in Thomas WV..  that elevation and those roads in and out of there are just a bit beyond our travel abilities, when it has snowed there steady for 4 days in row before the show..
but!  after that, we raged into Morgantown WV and got all wild and wonderful with the happy Mountaineers that night..  the good folks from Half Time String Band always warm things up with excellent pickin and singing, and LKNB got spiritual, spacey and psychedelic with one of the most improvisational shows we’ve ever played..  unforgettable night-
then, weather once again propelled us into a flurry of flight to get us on the road ahead of schedule last weekend, in order to make it to Colombus OH for a big night of mayhem and magic at Vic’s Midnight Cafe, sponsored by the Cowboy Hillbilly Hippy Folk..  5 bands in one night!  it was a 2-ring circus of splendid production–  back and forth between 2 stages, with fantastic sounds and mergings of minds with LKNB, Rumpke Mountain Boys, Cowboy Hillbilly Hippy Folk, Tin Hearts and One Under…!  Supreme fun and seamless flow of music for , like, 8 hours! Paul Painter is the man!
from there, we zipped through the steady snow and slush over to Pittsburgh, PA where things got scary and hairy weather wise—   thank goodness for 4 Low on the transmission..  it helps, when nothing’s been plowed!  but we made it to the wonderful Rex Theater in a super cool section of Pittsburgh..  there, we met up with our great bluegrass buddies, Greensky Bluegrass band, and the evening was launched with 2 huge sets from both bands-  great sounds abounded-   we all collaborated on a mini super set of bluegrass and reggae favorites-  we love the way those guys do “Stop that Train” by Peter Tosh..
onward through the winter fog and sleet down to Cincinnati on Saturday, where we met up with good buddies Rumpke Mountain Boys again, for a fuller night of music from those excellent folks-   they rocked a superb set of music-  talk about the ultimate fun zone!  the Play by Play is a great place to hear music-  the crew there treats everyone right..  we couldn’t help but rocket into some super satisfying pickin –  we’re on a Miles Davis kick right now, so everything has an extra improv-spontaneous-combustion, plus mountain magic feel at the moment..  AND THEN!!!!  as an added, incredible surprise, the great Jeremy Saunders (first horn in the Marine Corps Band, and member of Acoustic Syndicate!!) joined us for our set!  he sends things into an orbit that’s rarely heard, and fosters a musical exploration that we all are eager to take part in!!  then, we added all the Rumpke Mt. Boys for an extended jam that sent everything into ultra orbit..  no one wanted the night to end…..      it was pretty late when it did!
until the next episode————
