Asheville’s Tellico Debuts with Relics and Roses, Due Out June 2nd

Tellico takes you on a journey through the modern Appalachian soundscape, with masterful storytelling and memorable instrumental and vocal performances that wed tradition with a contemporary Americana sensibility

ASHEVILLE, NC — Tellico independently releases their debut album Relics and Roses on June 2, 2015. The album features the singing and songwriting of Anya Hinkle (guitar, fiddle) and Stig Stiglets (bass), and showcases Aaron Ballance on dobro and pedal and lap steel and Jed Willis on mandolin and clawhammer banjo. Guitar virtuoso Jon Stickley (Jon Stickley Trio) produced the album and makes a few guest appearances with drums and guitar.

The album is available now for pre-order at Tellicoband.com and includes an immediate download of the leading track, “Backstep Blues,” which is also available to stream now at the band’s website. Firmly planted in Asheville NC’s thriving roots music scene, Tellico is well schooled in bluegrass but with an unbridled organic “Appalachiacana” sound, combining some of the finest voices, songs and instrumental prowess in western North Carolina and beyond. Anya and Stig’s committed, authentic vocals are alloyed with Aaron’s flowing and soaring dobro and Jed’s textured and expressive mandolin, rooted in the mountain music they grew up with while pushing tradition into a modern Americana sound aesthetic.

Storytelling is at the helm of Tellico’s music. All of the songs on Relics and Roses were penned by Hinkle and Stiglets with the exception “White Line-River of Pride,” a Neil Young and Crazy Horse medley of two dirty electric rock tunes buttoned up bluegrass-style. The leading track, “Backstep Blues” [Hinkle] has a “backstep”, a rhythmic hiccup that is typical of old time music, telling the story of a man’s successive retreat from his wife (with the refrain “hey where did your daddy go wrong?”), leaving her with the “backstep blues.” “Calamity”, written by Stiglets, is a tale of disaster sparked by a combination of Hurricane Katrina and Japan’s 2011 tsunami, and the destructive and terrifying images of those events.

“Forsaken Winds” is poetry unto itself with the ethereal sounds of Ballance’s pedal steel filling in the spirit of the lyrics; while “Hawkeye Pierce and Honeycutt Blues” is a tongue and cheek raggy romp in an Asheville street busker’s shoes. “You Can’t Go Home Again” is inspired by Asheville author Thomas Wolfe’s book of the same name. Anya found the book to be so richly descriptive in Wolfe’s longwinded style, especially when the protagonist DOES go home again, which she said, “reminded me of something that my dad always used to say: ‘you can’t go home again’! Of course you can’t. The comforting idea of home is just that, an idea. You have to face yourself and your life. Running from it, either to home or far away from it, doesn’t alleviate your suffering.”

“Mexico 1995” is a coming-of-age story penned by Hinkle after a solo four month journey, mostly by bus, from Nogales, Arizona through Guatemala and back. It was before the internet, before cell phones, and after a grisly war and genocide in southern Mexico and Guatemala, a real eye opener for a kid, all during the winter after Jerry Garcia died. Hinkle says, “That early morning that I walked back, on foot, into my post-college privileged American life after crossing the border at Nogales was like a dream, I was a ghost in my own shoes, my idea of who I was as porous as the haze that seemed to linger that entire day that I re-emerged.” The song uses samples from iconic songs that set up the general feeling that it’s all been done before. Hinkle reflects, “Where does a kid go with that? What’s ahead that’s worth anything?”

Relics and Roses is the first since Anya, Stig, and Aaron formed Tellico after recording four records with the Asheville-based bluegrass band Dehlia Low, whose final album Ravens and Crows was released on the Rebel Records label in 2011.

“I love how the songs on Relics and Roses sound with these musicians covering all details that I didn’t even realize I was longing to hear. The band’s rich playing overlays absolutely perfectly with the meanings of the songs, whether playful and amusing or searching, haunting and lonely,” says Hinkle.

What Folks are Saying About Relics and Roses:

“With deep warm tones, intimate vocals, vivid lyrics, natural arrangements, and emotional solos Tellico masterfully draws the listener into the center of their original songs. Relics and Roses paints a cinematic picture, continually stirring feelings of nostalgia. Through their wonderful musicianship they never fail to create an atmosphere that perfectly enhances their storytelling.  I love this CD!”
Chad Manning of the David Grisman Bluegrass Experience

“….wonderfully original mountain music. Sometimes they sound like what Kate Wolf would sound like had she come from the Southern Appalachians – a beloved image if you ask me.” —Martin Anderson, Music Director & Morning Host WNCW-FM

“The album of mostly original songs is superbly orchestrated and delivered taking the listener on an auditory odyssey that ranges from soulful and deep to upbeat and euphoric. Anya, Aaron, Stig, and Jed have woven a tapestry that is timeless and authentic and deserving of your attention.” —Steve Johnson, Event Producer/Artist Relations Manager, Wilkesboro, NC

“Tellico picks up where Dehlia Low left off, focusing and refining their sound. Relics and Roses is… step forward in songwriting, with Anya Hinkle and Greg ‘Stig’ Stiglets crafting an acoustic soundscape of Appalachian daydreams that stack up to the works of John Hartford, Emmylou Harris and the Avett Brothers. Songs like ‘I Want To Know’ reach out and grab you immediately… a captivating album.”

More about Tellico at: tellicoband.com, facebook.com/tellico & twitter.com/TellicoBand

Tellico is the most recent product of Asheville NC’s thriving roots music scene, with its members well schooled in bluegrass but with an unbridled organic Appalachiacana sound, and they are excited to be debuting an album in 2015. Tellico features the singing and songwriting of Anya Hinkle (guitar, fiddle, vocals) and Stig Stiglets (bass, vocals) with Aaron Ballance on dobro, as well as Jed Willis on mandolin and clawhammer banjo. After playing together late last year, three former members of the Asheville bands Dehlia Low (Anya, Aaron, and Stig) and Town Mountain (Jed) decided the combination of so much history together and the excitement of a new project was so compelling that they decided to form Tellico.

Tellico in riverWell known for their rootsy, authentic singing and vocal harmony, as well as in the hard-edge nostalgic yet modern themes of their songwriting, the quartet combines some of the finest voices, songs and instrumental prowess in western North Carolina and beyond. In previous lineups, the band’s members have performed at some of the nation’s most prestigious festivals and venues including MerleFest, Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival, Bristol Rhythm and Roots, Mountain Song Festival, and the Freight and Salvage. Aaron also won the Rockygrass Dobro Competition in 2010. Anya, Stig and Aaron also recorded under the Rebel Records label in 2011 for Dehlia Low’s Ravens and Crows album as well as three other independent releases with their previous band between 2007 and 2010.

Folks are excited to hear the new music and within the first 24 hours of launching a 33-day Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for their debut album they had met their goal of $7500. By day nine, they had surpassed it to reach $10,000. The band is wowed by all of the support which will not only enable them to make the album, but also to expand their calendar and get their music out to more listeners across the country. Tellico has reached a beautiful milestone in this campaign and now has a bit over 100 backers! This campaign has always been about getting the music out there and growing a community around that effort and they still have more than halfway to go.

Seeing such a positive response from the community, the band would like to grow the Tellico family over the remainder of the campaign to double the amount of backers to 200 at any reward level! Getting involved before the CD is even made allows them to get as many CDs printed as they can, which will shipped out to backers before the album even releases to the public. In addition, becoming a backer means becoming a part of the project, and a feeling of investment in the album’s recording and release, as well as helping to provide us more financial options than if you were to purchase the album after it is released. Backers become Tellico’s record label, the band digs it, wants you to join them in this and for you to bring your friends along for the ride too!

“Connecting with and hearing from their fans makes such a difference in the way they think about the “why” part of what they do. It’s wonderful hearing from you,” says Anya Hinkle. One backer, LFW, wrote “Dehlia Low’s music brought me through some of the most difficult times in my life as I coped with the illness/deaths of my parents…… and, of course, still inspires me today. I’m so thankful for that and feel like I owe these wonderful talented musicians. Looking forward to hearing the great/beautiful music they will produce. Can’t wait for the CD!!!”

The songs that will be on the album reflects the sights, sounds, and feelings of living in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina capturing the resonating and universal themes of love, disaster, cheatin’, loss, busking, dreams, and change. The blend of Anya and Stig’s committed, authentic vocals with Aaron’s flowing and soaring dobro and Jed’s textured and expressive mandolin bring to the songs their foundation, rooted in the mountain music they grew up with, but taken to somewhere unique.

Check out the video they made for the campaign and listen to a few demo cuts of three new songs at  http://bit.ly/TellicoKickstarter. Please do help us spread the word with friends and family that may be interested!

By becoming a backer for our upcoming album, not only do you get an autographed copy of the disk mailed right to your door, but also other perks only available to backers, like personal thank-yous, limited edition hats, shirts, crafts and stickers, demos and pre-release tracks, photos from the studio and project updates. Most importantly though, you join us in the process creating this album.  It’s a big world but it becomes smaller when we connect with each other. And more fun.

What folks are saying about Tellico:

“Tellico’s music is easy enough to understand at first: acoustic music rooted in Appalachian traditions that is memorable and well played, with a female lead singer whose voice is as dreamy and sad as it is soulful and sweet. But there’s so much more to it than that, and uncovering all the layers of what makes Tellico special can become a kind of captivating mystery story. Here you have members of bands Dehlia Low and Town Mountain making music that is both true to their roots but unique and fresh. It’s music that can appeal to die-hard old-time, bluegrass, ragtime and blues fans while bending the ears of folks who never liked songs that even came close to a pair of overalls. Front and center is the voice of Anya Hinkle, who reminds me of Billie Holiday in a Carter Family setting; she seals the deal. I’m very much looking forward to hearing their first album.” –Joe Kendrick, WNCW 88.7 FM & Producer of Lingua Musica, Asheville, NC

“Delivering an authentic Appalachian string band sound aesthetic with modern but timeless lyrics, Tellico defines Asheville Americana. These musicians will touch your heart and mind with their cabin porch informed vocals and tasteful instrumentation….every song’s a ‘keeper’”. –Davis Tracy, WDCV Carlisle, PA & Bluegrass@Dickenson

“It strikes a chord in me…it sends chills up my spine.” –“Hippie” Jack Stoddart, Jammin’ at Hippie Jack’s Americana Festival and Council for Americana Roots Music

“I knew from the first moment I heard Anya sing that I had found the voice I craved to hear once again–a voice that is both unique yet beautiful, with a truly authentic quality. I can’t wait to review the forthcoming Tellico release.” –Dennis Brunnenmeyer, KVMR, Nevada City Limits, Nevada City CA

Town Mountain 2013 Galax - Jason Beverly HI RES

Town Mountain & Lead Vocalist Robert Greer
Win Two IBMA Momentum Awards

Performance, Vocalist – Robert Greer, Town Mountain
Performance, Band – Town Mountain

“A stone gem” –Mike Greenblatt, Aquarian Weekly

“Rollicking straight-ahead fare, proto-rock, neo-trad country and jaunty boho picking” –Jewly Hight, Nashville Scene

Congratulations to Town Mountain and their lead vocalist Robert Greer on winning 2013 IBMA Momentum Awards. Robert Greer brings home the Momentum Award for “Vocalist of the Year” and Town Mountain is awarded the honor for “Performance Band of the Year.”  The awards cap off a year of fantastic growth for the band which began with the release of their sophomore Pinecastle Records album, Leave the Bottle. The band is pumped for next year and kicks off festival season with performances at Mountain Song at Sea, Wintergrass, Suwannee Springfest, MerleFest and others to be announced.

Based in Asheville, NC, Town Mountain is Robert Greer on vocals and guitar, Jesse Langlais on banjo and vocals, Phil Barker on mandolin and vocals, Bobby Britt on fiddle, and Jake Hopping on upright bass.

TownMtn_LeaveTheBottleWEB1One listen to their instantly memorable songs, and it’s plain to see why Grammy-winner Mike Bub would align with the group to produce Leave the Bottle as well as Steady Operator [2011]. Leave the Bottle effortlessly covers a wide array of styles in the string band spectrum featuring the stellar in-house songwriting that has become the band’s trademark. There’s the barroom swagger and honky tonk edge of tracks like “Up the Ladder” and the title track “Leave the Bottle”, the Jimmy Martin style bounce and confidence of “Lawdog” and “Lookin’ in the Mirror”, the Irish flavor of Bobby Britt’s “Four Miles”, and the laid back John Hartford style groove of “Greenbud on the Flower” among others. But no matter the style, the band’s delivery gives every tune a true and honest feel. The album went on to be listed as #6 Best Bluegrass Album of 2012 by Pop Matters, and WNCW listeners voted it #19 in the Top 100 albums of 2012. They will be working on a new album in the winter of 2014. Stay tuned to their website for more details.

“I’m not sure what the definition of bluegrass would be in words alone, but if that definition was set to music, it would probably sound something like Town Mountain’s Leave the Bottle… I could go on,” says Bluegrass Today’s David Morris, “There are no duds, and no filler songs on this project. But you get the point. This, my friends, is how bluegrass is supposed to sound.”

I am thrilled to announce jazz/ rock Steel-Pannist Jonathan Scales is touring around his album release with a few shows opening up for classically trained pop cellist Ben Sollee this June!

Ben Sollee is a genre-bending cellist and vocalist who released his new album “Inclusions” on May 10th. Armed with a cello, Sollee is canvassing the country, sometimes by bicycle, imploring folks to rediscover the connections between music, art, film, dance, their community, and personal relationships. American Songwriter states, “Inclusions is a thoughtful and thoroughly imaginative album about what a huge and complicated undertaking it is to truly relate to other human beings, what with all our mismatches in expectations and differences in background, experience and belief.”

Jonathan Scales has been called a “…rising star of the steel drums…” by Traps Magazine, while Pan on the Net refers to him as “the Real Deal” and having “A Thelonius Monk-like attitude with a Mozart creativity that works.”  When Steel Talks sums it up with, “At the end of the day, Scales is going to be a major play in rewriting the books on steelpan music outside of the box.” Like Sollee, Scales is also touring around a new release “Character Farm & Other Short Stories” which features guest appearances by Jeff Coffin (of Dave Matthews Band/Bela Fleck & the Flecktones), Yonrico Scott & Kofi Burbridge (of Derek Trucks Band), and fiddle virtuoso Casey Driessen. “Through the album’s countless turns, Scales manages to blend in the very particular sound of steel pan seamlessly with everything from a flute, horn and saxophone to the oft-accompanying electric guitar, all while showing off the easily stereotyped instrument in a new light,” declares Exclaim.CA.

Jonathan Scales and his Fourchestra will be opening for Sollee on:

Friday, June 3 ~ Old Rock House ~ St. Louis, MO
Saturday, June 4 ~ White Rabbit Cabaret ~ Indianapolis, IN

The Mast perform their debut piece ‘Figure Eights’ at The Magnetic Field on March 27. ‘Figure Eights’ explores one woman’s quest to steer the cavalry of her own imagination through songs, electronic soundscapes & monologues

“Haale’s warm, supple voice unfurled like a curlicue of smoke”-New York Times
“Brilliantly produced rhythms”- Popmatters
www.TheMastMusic.com

Asheville, NC- The Mast is the latest project by the Brooklyn-based vocalist/poet Haale and percussionist/producer Matt Kilmer. Described as, “One of the most expansive duos out there, The Mast has to be experienced live,” by the BeaconPass.com. They are set to debut their performance piece Figure Eights at the Magnetic Field in Asheville, NC on Sunday, March 27, 2011. The performance is $15 and starts at 8pm.

“An extraordinarily powerful vocalist. The emotions expressed in Haale’s songs are as warm and inviting as the sounds…” exclaims Jim Derogatis with the Chicago Sun Times. Through songs, electronic soundscapes, and monologues, Figure Eights explores one woman’s quest to steer the cavalry of her own imagination from a preoccupation with doom and disaster, to something brighter, the golden nectar, tucked inside the crimson bell of a flower, for instance. Existence and the spectrum of possibility! Where are we putting our attention? Within a world soaked with images of violence, there still exists the hummingbird, flapping its wings 80 times per second in the shape of figure eights, hovering at the mouth of a flower to energize itself off the sweet elixir. Master attendant to and perpetuator of beauty–a creature, she decides, worth emulating. The piece is a series of snapshots, starting with her childhood spent swimming in seas of anxiety, and following her through a fascinating transformation. A celebration of alchemy and the mind’s triumphant malleability.

Before they launched The Mast in 2010, Haale and Matt Kilmer were writing, performing, and touring together for 3 years under Haale’s name. Starting in 2007, upon the release of the EPs, ‘Paratrooper’ and ‘Morning,’ they toured across the country, in Canada, and Europe playing such venues as the Bonnaroo festival, the David Byrne-curated series at Carnegie Hall, the Hillside Festival, Celebrate Brooklyn, Mimi Festival in France, and Preservation Hall in New Orleans. In March 2008, they released the full-length album ‘No Ceiling’ which the Boston Globe called ‘one of the year’s most memorable releases.’

The Mast will release their debut album, Wild Poppies, in the spring of 2011. Music can be heard on www.TheMastMusic.com and  www.haale.com.

Recording ‘Wild Poppies’ from upcoming album to be released spring 2011:

In Persian, Mast means “intoxicated with existence, in a blissful state of wonder and awe,” which is exactly how Figure Eights will leave you feeling in this not-to-be-missed performance.

Two amazingly talented acts will be performing at The Evening Muse this Thursday, February 24th in Charlotte, NC: Cathie Ryan and Larry Keel & Natural Bridge.

Traditional Irish vocalist Cathie Ryan (Cherish the Ladies) is suberbly talented and has receive the award of “Female Vocalist of the Decade” by liveireland.com. Cathie will be accompanied on guitar and vocals by Ireland native Patsy O’Brien whose guitar playing moves from driving rhythm to delicate and melodic finger picking. The New Haven Advocate writes, “His music is stomping and ocean breezy – sure footed and fragile …”. Cathie will also be accompanied by on fiddle by New York born Matt Mancuso, who was the star fiddle player in Lord of the Dance – performing to sell out crowds throughout the world; a founding member of the rousing ensemble The Mickey Finns, and has taken star turns in tours with Irish super-group Grada. Cathie Ryan starts the evening off at 8pm.

Alternative Bluegrass ensemble Larry Keel and Natural Bridge have a show in the late evening slot, beginning at 10:30pm.  Larry Keel is award winning flatpicker that is well known for his gravelly voice and lightning fast licks. Keel is backed by his band, Natural Bridge made up of the vastly talented Mark Schimick on mandolin and vocals, Larry’s life-long picker pal (and fishing phenom) Will Lee on soulful, blues-grass style 5-string banjo and penetrating lead vocals, and wife Jenny Keel with her impeccable timing and solid, yet imaginative bass lines as well as tenor vocal harmonies.

Cathie Ryan

Irish American singer-songwriter, Cathie Ryan, has been called a “thrilling traditional vocalist,” by the Boston Globe. Billboard Magazine says her voice is, “enchanting.” and The Irish Echo says her singing is “mature, masterful, at times magnificent.” Since her acclaimed seven year tenure as lead singer of Cherish the Ladies, Cathie has released 4 critically acclaimed CDs on Shanachie Records: Cathie Ryan, The Music of What Happens, Somewhere Along the Road, and her latest, The Farthest Wave. She is featured on more than forty compilations of Celtic Music worldwide, including the renowned A Woman’s Heart – A Decade On.

Cathie tours internationally, headlining at performing arts centers, folk festivals, and guest starring with symphony orchestras. A captivating performer, Cathie’s shows are renowned for their blend of song, story, and the virtuoso playing of her award-winning band. “Anyone wondering what constitutes excellence in Irish American singing today, need only attend a Cathie Ryan concert…” The Wall Street Journal.

“There is a powerful sweetness in Cathie Ryan’s voice, as well as a Celtic intensity that can be felt in all the songs she writes and sings–songs of place, songs of memory, poignant songs of the heart,” state Billy Collins, Former U.S. Poet Laureate.

Larry Keel and Natural Bridge

“With an unofficial title of ‘Bluegrass Legend and Master Fisherman’, Larry Keel is considered one of the best flatpickers on the planet. Steeped in the old-timey and with a gravelly voice as deep and rich as moonshine on a riverbank… Larry’s flat-picking style is as seamless as it is gymnastic and he’s a master at simulating banjo rolls, mandolin runs or even parts that you would normally hear played on a fiddle,” touts Mousike Magazine.

John Patrick Gatta from Jambands.com depicts, “It’s the approach to the material that makes all the difference here, a hybrid of bluegrass with folk, country and jazz that tweaks the arrangements in subtly, shifting ways to grab one’s attention. Keel dubs it New Mountain Music, and that’s good enough for me. It feels like sunshine peaking through a thick forest or a sunrise with the grass caked by morning dew.”

Keel has weathered the changing tides of traditional bluegrass, country, jam rock, roots reggae, and even the currently emerging indie-alt scene always honoring the pioneers that introduced Bluegrass and Mountain Music into popular culture. Throughout his career, Keel has released 13 albums and is featured on 10 others. He is an ever-evolving musical force that stands in ongoing defiance to all genre expectations. And his fierce, high-spirited energy also appeals to young rockers, jammers and alt country pickers and fans who are equally drawn to Keel’s deep rumbling voice, his earthy and imaginative song-writing, and his down-home-gritty-good-time charm.

Guitar Player Magazine states, “When bluegrass guitar greats Tony Rice, Norman Blake, and Beppe Gambeta sing your praises, you must be good.”

As a band, they are joined by Jeff Crawford on bass and James Wallace on drums.

Donna the Buffalo takes the stage tonight, Thursday May 6th at Rhythm and Brews in Chattanooga, TN. Also performing are the Infamous Stingdusters.

Check out this  interview with Tara Nevins and The Chattanooga Times Free Press:

Infamous, Buffalo take the stage at Rhythm & Brews

Even after 20 years fronting Donna the Buffalo, Tara Nevins said she can’t imagine doing anything else.

“We never thought about the future when we started doing it,” the co-lead vocalist and multi-instrumentalist said of the band’s 1989 formation near Ithaca, N.Y. “We just started doing it, and here we are, 21 years later.

“It’s pretty awesome, really.”

Tonight, members of the band are returning to the stage at Merlefest, their frequent stomping grounds. Thursday, the eclectic roots/folk rock quintet will share the stage at Rhythm & Brews with Nashville’s bluegrass giants The Infamous Stringdusters.

With the exception of a handful of albums released on Sugar Hill Records, Donna the Buffalo has avoided securing ties with major record labels. That self-reliant approach to the music has been a boon in recent years as label support has diminished, Nevins said.

“We definitely feel like we’re in control and working for ourselves. It’s our deal,” she said. “There are so many bands that are struggling, and we’re pretty fortunate.”

Nevins comprises half the vocal forefront of the band, alongside fellow founder Jed Puryear. Nevins’ stylistic flexibility combines with Puryear’s more traditional singer/songwriter sensibilities to fit an overall sound that carries traces of everything from reggae and zydeco to somber ballads.

Over the years, the band has engaged itself with its community and has developed a strong cult following: the self-proclaimed Herd.

“We’re … a really grassroots operation,” Nevins said. “We built everything up from the ground up. I think that’s kind of what makes it able to work.”

“We definitely feel like we’re in control and working for ourselves. It’s our deal. It’s our own well-oiled machine, in a way.” — Donna the Buffalo lead singer Tara Nevins on the benefits of independence.
