Chad Elliott & The Redemptions Release
Rest Heavy on August 10, 2018
Bluesy, Rockin’ and Soulful Original Music
Recorded at Sun Studio in Memphis

LAMONI, IAIowa singer-songwriter, artist and author, Chad Elliott, independently releases Rest Heavy: The Sun Studio Sessions on August 10, 2018. Elliott’s writing weaves love, loss and forgiveness into well-worn lyrics with timeless melodies. “Low, loose, and full of juice. This album’s got a lot of life to it,” said acclaimed Iowa singer-songwriter Greg Brown.

With Rest Heavy, Elliott shows his love of roots-rock, soul, and blues music with a rocking band behind his artfully crafted songs and gravelly delivery. The self-produced album was recorded by Ples Hampton at the famed Sun Studio in Memphis, TN. Hampton said, “It was honestly one of the best sessions I’ve ever had up here. This is gold.”

Elliott, performing on acoustic guitar and harmonica, is joined by his full band, The Redemptions, which includes Tommy Lewis (electric guitar, harmonica, background vocals), Travis McFarlane (piano, B3 organ, keys), Kevin Boehnke (acoustic guitar, trumpet), Joseph Cafaro (upright bass), and Jim Van Dorn (drums).

“I could, literally, feel the shift in the music just by walking through the doors at Sun Studio. The room seemed to have its own electric currency running through it and it made the songs come alive. We walked away feeling like we had an out of body experience. There were times I would just sit in the corners and look into the air of the room to see if that legendary music was still floating there, mixing with ours,” Elliott said.

Elliott’s live performances, whether with a full band or solo, are a blend of engaging storytelling and memorable song lyrics that captivate audiences of all ages. He said, “Live performance is every bit as creative as the writing process. I love the energy created between performer and audience. It can be a heartbreaking solo ballad or a full band, foot-stomping blues song. When it connects there is no better feeling.”

The Daily Country premiered the title track, “Rest Heavy,” and says it, “grabs your heart and soul with its classic harmonica-infused melody, tempered backbeat, and Elliott’s gravelly yet warm delivery that nods to the memory of the greats who made their mark at Sun.”
Listen here http://bit.ly/TDC_RestHeavy_SongPremiere.

Rest Heavy ranges from modern gospel love songs like the title track (with its throwback soul sound) to the tale of unrequited love in “Alberta.” He delves into country soul with “Hills of Tennessee,” recalls early Tom Waits in the jazzy Cadillac Problems, Buick Times,” adds in some Parlor blues in “Slow Again,” and offers some bottom feeder blues with “Dirty River (Catfish Blues).”

An American ramble song that tips its hat to beat poets, musicians, and ramblers of the world, “Shy of Shameless” is a travel log of sorts. It depicts Elliott’s years of touring and wandering America, living out of a vehicle.

Embarcadero Street” has a raw feel to it with its slinky slide guitar, trashy drums, and the lyrics “Never would’ve guessed I was on the edge… Because I kept myself so clean… Shaved my beard up good and tight… Tried to wash away all the mean… Elliott said, “Years ago, Embarcadero Street in San Francisco was my stomping grounds during a difficult time in my life. I slept on park benches and abandoned piers. This song is like a brief journal entry for me.”

A deeply personal song, “Shining Stars” has a more ethereal sound, highlighting the acoustics of the room and the B3 organ, making this intimate song feel like a throwback to the 50s. Similarly, Water Under the Bridge” is a mending song with a serene groove. Elliott said, “Forgiveness for the sake of peace — that is what ‘Water Under the Bridge’ is about. Finding a place of atonement so one can move on past pain and fear.”

St. James Infirmary,” the only cover on the eleven-track album, is an old New Orleans flavored traditional. Elliott said, “We were in Memphis, so we picked up the tempo and did it in just one take as a bonus track. I have always loved the dark mystery of this song. It was an added bonus track and the entire band let loose.”

Elliott’s early career demonstrates a love of folk, roots, and singer-songwriter music. He has worked with many greats and shared the stage with artists of the highest caliber, including Odetta, Tom Paxton, Loudon Wainwright III, R.L. Burnside, Greg Brown, Ruthie Foster, Jimmie Vaughan, etc.

“Chad’s songs are inspired by real life and by real people,” said Bronson Herrmuth, “They’re not conjured up in a cookie cutter fashion designated by songwriting rules or regulations. He sings out loud and proud about the places he’s been, the things he’s seen, his life experiences, and those of his family and friends.”

Elliott has released 22 albums including The Den Sessions in 2010 which is a ten-volume set. His most recent being RINGGOLD (2017) and Wreck and Ruin (2015). He has been featured on Iowa Public Radio’s Java Blend (“rootsy, gravely growl and impressive, tasteful guitar work”), showcased at Folk Alliance International, composed and performed music for several IPTV documentaries, and won prestigious awards, such as the Woody Guthrie Song Contest (2009).

Elliott performs more than 200 shows each year and is lauded as “Iowa’s Renaissance Man” by Culture Buzz. He has cultivated over 1,000 songs in his career while also honing his skills as a painter, sculptor, and children’s book author/illustrator (Wilderman’s Treetop Tales). He recently published a poetry book, Rumble & Flash.

Rest Heavy jumps right at you and doesn’t let go,” said Rob Ellen of The UK’s Medicine Show Radio. “The whole piece has an edge you can shave with.”

LIVE OAK, FL — Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park is pleased to announce additions to the 3rd Annual Suwannee Roots Revival which takes place Thursday, October 11 – Sunday, October 14 at the magical Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park (SOSMP) in Live Oak, Florida. Additions include Oteil & Friends, Leftover Salmon, Bruce Cockburn, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades, Shinyribs, Dustbowl Revival, Jon Stickley Trio, The Grass Is Dead, Jonathan Scales Fourchestra, David Gans as Artist-at-Large, and more! These superb additions join in on an already stellar lineup that includes Keller Williams’ PettyGrass Featuring The HillBenders, Donna the Buffalo, The Seldom Scene, Samantha Fish, Peter Rowan Free Mexican Airforce, Jim Lauderdale, Verlon Thompson, Rev. Jeff Mosier, and Joe Craven & The Sometimers.

With multiple stages (Amphitheater Stage, Porch Stage, Dance Tent, Music Hall, and Music Farmer’s Stage) Suwannee Roots Revival is jam-packed with stellar music and dance and many bands will perform multiple sets. This family-friendly festival includes four days of music, camping, yoga, music workshops, a Kids Tent, as well as campground pickin’ sessions. Set in the midst of 800 acres of Spanish moss-draped oak and cypress trees along the Suwannee River, the venue is a playground for endless activities such as swimming, canoeing, kayaking, disc golf, and biking.

Oteil Burbridge will lead an all-star cast as Oteil & Friends featuring John Kadlecik, Weedie Braimah, Alfreda Gerald, Jay Lane, Scott Metzger [JRAD], and Jason Crosby [Phil Lesh & The Terrapin Family Band]. Oteil is no stranger to the Suwannee festival family, originally playing SOSMP with Aquarium Rescue Unit and Oteil & The Peacemakers back in the day, as well as his annual Allman Brothers Band appearances in April. With his current gig with Dead and Company going better than ever, he’s making new fans everywhere he goes and Oteil & Friends will bring his vast and varied experiences into what promises to be a transcendental set that will be long remembered.

Festival director Beth Judy says, “Oteil has so many options right now, still he loves our festivals and he chose us. All his friends joining him are stellar musicians, but, I absolutely ADORE Alfreda Gerald’s voice! I can’t wait!”

Leftover Salmon, also a longtime Suwannee favorite who has played multiple times over the years, is one of the great purveyors of Americana that dig deep into the well that supplies its influences; rock ‘n’ roll, folk, bluegrass, Cajun, soul, zydeco, jazz and blues. They will be traveling with a new album, Something Higher (released May 2018), in which they tap into everything from horn-blasting R&B to reverb-drenched desert noir, from the cosmic roots music sound they helped create to neo-New Orleans-meets-Appalachia liquefaction. We are so excited to hear some of the new tunes at Suwannee Roots Revival!

One of Canada’s finest artists, Bruce Cockburn has enjoyed an illustrious career shaped by politics, spirituality, and musical diversity embracing folk, jazz, rock, and worldbeat styles. For 40 years, this Canadian musical legend has been capturing in song the essence of human experience – while fiercely striving to make it better for his activism on issues from native rights and land mines to the environment and Third World debt.

Bluegrass mavericks, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades, will be traveling in from Wisconsin with their 2018 album release, The Ode. Shinyribs is the continuation of The Gourds’ Kevin Russell’s musical journey of country-soul, swamp-funk and tickle; a Shinyribs show is an exaltation of spirit: a hip shaking, belly laughing, soul-singing, song-slinging, down-home house party. An eclectic eight-piece, Dustbowl Revival mines an energizing vein of soul, funk and roots-infused rock. Jon Stickley Trio is a genre-defying and cinematic instrumental trio: innovative flatpicking guitar and sultry-spacy violin along with classically trained and heavily jazz-influenced drums. The Grass Is Dead will make us all smile, smile, smile… Pickin’ and grinnin’ is what they do best, and they have been adapting Grateful Dead songs in their own bluegrass style since 1998.

Known nationwide as a purveyor of literate, improvisational folk-rock with looping, singer/songwriter/producer/photographer/author David Gans has composed, performed, and written about music for the whole of his adult life and Suwannee Roots Revival is thrilled to host him as an Artist-at-Large. He has been on the road this year with The Grass Is Dead and Rev. Jeff Mosier and we are excited to see who else he will be sitting in with! Gans will also broadcast his Sunday SiriusXM Radio Show, Tales From The Golden Road, live from the festival.

With stunning, virtuosic technique, multi-instrumentalist and composer Jonathan Scales is likely the most innovative steel drummer on the planet and his mesmerizing compositions and tasteful, avant-garde improvisation that set him apart from the pack. Bela Fleck, in considering Scales’ cover of his composition “The Imposter,” remarked “To say I am impressed would be a gross understatement…”

Katie Skene and Cosmic Kind is Skene along with John Molo (drums), Kevin Scott (bass), Rick Lollar (guitar) playing blues, soul, and rock under the influence of Col. Bruce Hampton. Hailing from the mountains of western North Carolina, Nikki Talley’s gorgeous voice and thoughtful songs are as eclectic as the state that boasts the mountains and the sea. Brett Bass and Melted Plectrum plays bluegrass with an edge, SYZYGY is the Gainesville, FL rock trio led by Suwannee favorite Tom Nelly, and The Corbitt Brothers are a trio with a hard-driving, southern rock sound.

The dance tent will continue to build a program of organized dance hosting bands for Contra/Square, Waltz, and Salsa. The Dunehoppers, from St. Augustine have been a staple of North Florida folk festival the past decade with a tasteful blend of high energy bluegrass, folk, and old time dance music. LPT is a 10-piece orchestra delivering salsa and Afro-Cuban music with their high-energy live shows. Based in Piedmont North Carolina, The Walker Family Band delights audiences with Irish dance and American old time music with a forward reaching attitude and will be your Waltz connection at the Dance Tent.

Take one part standup comic, mix in a bit of Penn & Teller, add a dash of Cirque Du Soleil, and you may come close to describing Jeff Bradley’s show. No matter if Jeff is on stage or holding court in the festival area, his comedy + cool stuff is not to be missed.

Hosted by long time friends of SOSMP, Randy Judy and Beth Judy, Suwannee Roots Revival focuses on amazing roots music that ties together a weekend laced with community based fun, growing friendships, laughing families, and that feel good feeling you get from hanging out in such a beautiful natural setting.

Amanda Anne Platt & The Honeycutters Play Salvage Station on Friday, July 20
opener tba
$15 adv/ $18 dos
468 Riverside Drive, Asheville, NC
www.salvagestation.com/events2/2018/7/21/amanda-anne-platt-and-the-honeycutters

ASHEVILLE, NC —  Lyrically driven, the songs of Amanda Anne Platt & The Honeycutters blend the band’s old-school country roots attitude with their shared influences of rock and folk. Based in Asheville, North Carolina, Amanda Anne Platt is a storyteller by nature with an incredible band backing her. Performing along Platt, The Honeycutters are Matt Smith on pedal steel and guitar, Rick Cooper on bass, Josh Milligan on drums and harmony vocals, and Evan Martin on keys and guitar.

There is an empathetic and charming wit ingrained in Platt’s songwriting. She has a knack for accessing a deep well of emotion and applying it to her story-telling, whether she is writing from her own experiences or immersing herself into the melody of emotions in another person’s life.

Music City Roots’ Craig Havighurst writes, “She’s soothing (even in the hurtin’ songs) and sobering (except for the drinkin’ songs) and nuanced in a way that I think tops even those rather famous ladies of the moment named Margo and Kacey… I’d be hard pressed to find a finer string of recordings from any band working in the classic country/mountain tradition in these last five years.”

A homegrown entity, the band is critically acclaimed locally, regionally, nationally, as well as overseas. Their most recent album Amanda Anne Platt & The Honeycutters [Organic Records 2017] placed #2 (sandwiched between Jason Isbell and Gregg Allman) in their regional radio station WNCW’s year end listeners poll for 2017! The station’s Music Director Martin Anderson said to No Depression, “Amanda Platt writes songs on par with Lucinda, Isbell, Lauderdale, Hank Sr. In my opinion, anyway.”

“This is a band that does everything right,” says Goldmine’s Mike Greenblatt. “Platt deserves all that might come to her over this, her fifth (and best) album. Backed by pedal steel, electric guitar, keyboards, bass, drums, percussion, and vocal harmony, it’s Platt’s show as she writes, sings and co-produces. Complete with lyrics of introspection with the kind of words you can chew on long after the album ends, it also works on a lighter level by dint of the fact that it just sounds so damn good. Go as deep as you want. It’s all good, as they say.”

Amanda Anne Platt & The Honeycutters received a shout out from Fodor’s Travel Magazine in a write-up about the band’s hometown of Asheville, NC, and a couple of years back they were also featured on XPN World Cafe’s Sense of Place series. In 2017, their music also placed into the Americana Music Association Year End Top 100 list of Americana Airplay for the second year in a row!

For the past ten years Amanda Anne Platt has been singing her original songs with her band The Honeycutters. In that time they have toured all over the United States and (parts of) Canada, as well as making their first trip overseas last summer, playing shows in England and Scotland garnering much praise and many sold out shows, and they made a lot of new friends and fans that they are excited to see again!

The UK’s American Roots’ Magazine Mike Morrison writes, “This is a band whose back catalogue is a match for anyone’s and yet still they’re improving. Modern country music really doesn’t get much better than the highly individual style of Amanda Anne Platt and the Honeycutters.”

The band is thrilled to have another overseas tour booked for this summer which will take them back to England and Scotland as well as to Ireland, Spain, and The Netherlands from late August through the end of September! They have an Indiegogo campaign currently running to help raise funds to cover the travel costs associated with the trip including round trip airfare to Dublin from the US for 5, internal flights, van and backline (amps, drums) rental, lodging (travelodges, tents, etc), and fuel with a goal aiming to raise $9000 by June 25 which they just surpassed today!

Everyone who donates will gain access to an exclusive (ooo!) tour blog (ahh!) featuring updates and anecdotes from Amanda, as well as photo and video documentation of the band as they experience some inevitable culture shock. Other perks include limited edition tee shirts, handwritten lyrics to an AAP song of your choice, pet portraits (Amanda says, “I don’t claim to be good at drawing, but it will be unique. I can guarantee that.”), CD packages, stickers, drink koozies, and a private House Concert.

Amanda says, “In these crazy days we live in it’s easy to forget that when a song comes on the radio and makes your day a little easier, there were a lot of people involved in getting that song there. However you support the arts, you are making it possible for working artists to keep creating. And when you do that, you are ensuring that this world will continue to have a thriving stream of original art and music. And we all need that!”

Amanda Anne Platt & The Honeycutters are a diamond in the rough, and through their music, travels, the friendships they make along the way, they will continue to bring music straight from the heart to the world.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA — LOVE CANON brings their acoustic-roots sensibilities to the electronic-tinged pop hits of the 80s and 90s to create Cover Story, their 4th album, due out on Organic Records July 13, 2018. With Cover Story, LOVE CANON delivers a fresh set of classics, crossing genres to recount music of decades past from the likes of Peter Gabriel, Billy Joel, Depeche Mode, and Paul Simon. The self-produced album hosts a plethora of special guests, including Jerry Douglas, Aoife O’Donovan, Keller Williams, Michael Cleveland, and Eric Krasno, among others.

The band’s diehard fans are music lovers first and are drawn to the charismatic and wide-ranging vocal stylings of lead singer and guitarist Jesse Harper matched with banjo master Adam Larrabee, mandolin pickin’ by Andy Thacker, Darrell Muller holding down the low-end on standup bass, and the slick sounds of resonator guitar king Jay Starling on the Beard MA-6. It’s acoustic rock! Acclaimed fiddler Alex Hargreaves [Turtle Island Quartet, Sarah Jarosz] does all of the fiddling on this record with the exception of two tracks, and he occasionally joins the band on tour.

As seasoned virtuoso string players who have been touring the mid-Atlantic since 2010, LOVE CANON stays true to the approach, arrangements, and keen artistry of these nostalgic hits. Cover Story was engineered by Rob Evans at Dave Matthews Band’s Haunted Hollow Studio in LOVE CANON’s hometown of Charlottesville, Virginia and mixed by Wayne Pooley, Bruce Hornsby’s Engineer/Producer. Cover Story is a follow up to the band’s previous efforts, Greatest Hits Volumes 1-3.

LOVE CANON has taken many of the suggestions called out at their high-energy live shows as well as from their guest performers to offer ten invigorating tracks to bring it to the max! From the instrumental album opener, Prelude (Angry Young Man)” by Billy Joel, to the unforgettable chorus of Howard Jones’ “Things Can Only Get Better” to the 7/4 timing of Peter Gabriel’s “Solsbury Hill / Icecaps Of Pentatonia (with guest vocalist Mark Errelli [Lori McKenna, Paula Cole and Josh Ritter]), they run the gamut of songs from the cassette generation.

The songs in Cover Story become a vehicle for the band to demonstrate their prowess in translating the original pop production compositions into the modern day acoustic music framework to achieve a new and different, but satisfyingly similar, sonic effect. A great example of using bluegrass instrumentation to imitate the ambient electronic processed sounds is the very epic, cinematic version of Depeche Mode’s Enjoy The Silence,” complete with a soaring string arrangement at the end by Trey Pollard of Richmond, Virginia’s Spacebomb Studios.

KyrieFINALcover.jpg

“Kyrie Eleison will be available on all digital platforms 6/8 → https://clg.lnk.to/x7xp9

When LOVE CANON was first thinking of putting together a guest artist record Jerry Douglas was at the top of their list. He not only acquiesced, but proposed the great Mr. Mister tune, Kyrie Eleison.” Mike Barnett [Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder, Bryan Sutton Band] joins in on fiddle for this track. Aoife O’Donovan seamlessly blends her beautiful vocal harmonies with Harper on Paul Simon’s Graceland,” and, with ten International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Fiddle Player of the Year awards under his belt, Michael Cleveland steps in blazing on fiddle.

Keller Williams brought “Driver 8” by R.E.M. to the band’s attention as a personal favorite; Keller wanted to do an uptempo bluegrass arrangement and LOVE CANON was envisioning a reggae/dub version, so they compromised and added the jaw-dropping classical fiddle work of Mike Barnett. Guitar hero Eric “Kraz” Krasno does a bang-up job with a fierce guitar solo on Squeeze’s Tempted,” a song he recommended. LOVE CANON’s take on the Barry Gibb [Bee Gees] classic, “Islands In The Stream” features Lauren Balthrop [Dear Georgiana, Balthrop Alabama, The Bandana Splits], singing the tarnation out of the Dolly Parton part while Harper takes on Kenny Rogers complete with a saxophone and trumpet section at the end featuring Charlottesville Jazz legends Bobby Read and John D’earth [Bruce Hornsby and The Noisemakers].

LOVE CANON and its individual members have shared the stage and studio with many notable acts over the years including Josh Ritter, Keller Williams, The Infamous Stringdusters, KD Lang, Emmylou Harris, Sara Bareilles, Huey Lewis and The News, John C. Reilly, Madeleine Peyroux, and Colbie Caillat, among others. They were the backing band for Keb Mo and Jason Mraz at SPARC performance LIVE ART event in Richmond, and performed as the house band at the Warren Haynes Christmas Jam in Asheville a couple of years in a row with sits-ins from Bruce Hornsby and Haynes, among others. Harper and Muller were members of acoustic supergroup Old School Freight Train and they performed shows with David Grisman (who also produced one of their albums), Ricky Skaggs, and Merle Haggard. LOVE CANON has performed at various events across the country including LOCKN’, Jam Cruise, FloydFest, Bourbon and Beyond (as part of the Bluegrass Situation Stage), and Gathering of the Vibes. They have also performed overseas live on the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) and RTE radio (Raidió Teilifís Éirean – Irish Public-service Broadcasting).

With this adventurous chapter in their Cover Story, Love Canon proves they don’t just know music history but have a vision for where music can go.
